    • Excerpt from "History and Genealogies of the Hammond Families in America Vol. 2":

      He was engaged with his uncles, Charles F. and John C. Hammond, in the mining and lumber business in Crown Point, N. Y., until 1857, when he sold his interests there and removed to Fairbault, Minn., where he engaged in banking, milling and real estate business, in which he has been very successful. In 1858, he was appointed Colonel of the 8th Regiment, State Militia, and in 1861 he raised a company for the 1st Minnesota Regiment and entered the service as its Captain, but was soon promoted to Major in the Regiment. After six months of active service he was obliged to resign and return home to attend to his business, but still took an active interest in the cause.
