Jackson's history of Newton and Bond's history of Watertown both give the date of his death as "March 15, 1738, aged 72 years," but an examination of Middlesex Probate Records shows that adm. was granted on his estate in 1720, and that a bond was given July 14, 1721, signed by Caleb Hammond, Ebenezer Hammond and nathaniel Hammond. the estate appears to have been held until Feb. 24, 1755, when it was appraised by Deacon John Stone and Thomas Greenwood and commissioners appointed to divide the property. the commissioners, Thomas Greenwood, John Stone and James Ward, reported to the court under date of March 18, 1755.

"Having thus perfected the Inventory we are of the opinion that to distribute the same will be predudicial to the whole. We have therefore set the whole of the forgoing pieces of land and part of the dwelling house on John Hammond, said deceast oldest son, in paying the Thomas Hammond, Caleb hammond, Mehitable Petty, the wife of James Petty, and mary Benjamin, the wife of Samuel Benjamin, four of said deceased children, as also the heirs of legal representatives of the children of Samuel Hammond deceast, as your Honor shall order." Thomas was at one time a Selectman in Newton. He was a Farmer and the owner of considerable land there.

John was a farmer in Newton. He bought of Rev. jared Eliot, of Conn., 370 acres of Gov. Hayne's farm in Newton in 1746, for which he paid oe600.

His will, (Middlesex Probate, No. 7152) dated March 25, 1763, proved June 27, 1763, gives to wife, Margaret, one third of estate "before any of my debts are paid," his executor to sell the remainder of the estate and pay all just debts and funeral expenses, the overplus, if not over oe40, to be equally divided between sons, Joshua and Enoch, and dau., Abigail Hammond. If there be more than oe40, the overplus to be divided between children, Joshua, Daniel, Samuel, Enoch, Margaret Merean, Anna Winchester and Abigail Hammond. To Joshua, Enoch and Abigail oe80 each after the decease of his wife.

"I have already given to sons, John and Abijah Hammond, their full shares and for that reason they are to have nothing more." "My children, Daniel, Samuel, Margaret and Anna have already received the most of their portions." Son, Joshua, exectutor. The signature is in a very unsteady hand. Witnesses Samuel Wilson, Thomas Fisk and Abr. Fuller.

Inventory of real estate: House and piece of land on northerly side of "County Way," containing 78 1/2 acres, bounded E. by Norman Clark and Ebenezer Parker, S. by "County Way," W. and N. by lands of Ebenezer Davis, oses White and Andrew Sever; barn and land on south side of "County Way," bounded E. by Norman Clark, Joshua Murdock and Ephraim War, S. by "Town Way," W. and N. by "County Way." oe667-1-8. John married Margaret WILSON on 11 Dec 1718. Margaret was born on 28 Aug 1699 in Newton, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts; died in 1788 in Newton, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Thomas went to Connecticut with his brother, Caleb, locating first in the town of Lebanon, New London Co.

"Thomas Hammond, of Newtown, County of Middlesex, Province of Massachusetts Bay," purchased land in Lebanon, Oct. 30, 1721. (Lebanon Town records, Vol. 3, p. 325) Thomas Hammond, then of Lebanon, sold land there June 7, 1722.( Lebanon Town Records, Vol. 3, p. 437.) His marriage or the births of any of his children do not appear on Lebanon records, which are very incomplete in vital statistics. It is not known how long he remained in Lebanon or where he went from there.

The next records of him which have been found are in the town of Wethersfield, Conn., and consist merely of the records of births of the two children of Thomas and Jane Hammond given below. These were probably younger children, but no records of older children have been found. the next record found is in Torrington, Conn., where Thomas Hammond and several others from Wethersfield purchased a tract of land and erected a mill and a tannery in 1739. No further record has been found of this family, but there were Hammonds in Torrington, perhaps his descendants, until within recent years. it is believed that his son, Thomas, who was born in Wethersfield, is the same Thomas Hammond who sold mill property in Connecticut and removed his family to the Shakers at harvard, Mass. but who died while settling up his property preparatory to joining them himself.

This Thomas made a provision that any of his children who desired to leave the Shakers should be allowed todo so on coming of age, and should be paid $100 each from the funds which he turned over to the community. A son Thomas did leave them and lived later in Shirley, Mass., where he died, leaving a numerous family. the connection is not fully proven, but there is so much circumstantial evidence that these families are given in this work as descendants of Thomas Hammond, of Wethersfield and Torrington, Conn.

He settled in Norwich, Conn., at the time of his marriage and remained there until 1734, when he removed to Windham, Conn., and remained there until 1740 or after, when he returned to Norwich.

The records of the town of Franklin, Conn., show that Caleb hammond united with the Congregational Church there, by profession, May 7, 1731. he lived at one time in the town of Scotland, Conn. "Caleb Hammond, of Newtown, County of Middlesex, Province of Massachusetts Bay," bought land in Lebanon, Conn., Feb. 1, 1723. (Lebanon Town records, Vol. 3, p. 438.) Caleb Hammond, then of Lebanon, bought more land there May 12, 1724. (Lebanon Town Records, Vol. 3, p. 539.) He bought more land there Jan. 6, 1729. (Ibit, Vol. 3, p. 559). He sold land there May 25, 1726. (Ibid, Vol. 4, p. 6)

Caleb married Mary BREWSTER on 21 Nov 1723 in Norwich, New London, Connecticut, USA. Mary was born in May 1703 in Norwich, New London, Connecticut, USA; died after 17 Jul 1760 in Prob Norwich, Connecticut. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Samuel Hammond probably held residence in Newton, although his death occurred in Boston, as his estate was settled as of Newton. The settlement of his estate is recorded in Middlesex Probate, No. 7,158. Administration on the estate of Samuel Hammond, late of Newton, was granted to the widow, Eunice Hammond, Nov. 1, 1736, and her bond, with Samuel Benjamin and David Sanger as sureties, was filed. Inventory of the estate of John Spring, Nathaniel Hammond and thomas Hammond was field Nov. 12, 1736. Amount, L100-14-2.

The bond of Robert Prentice, weaver, with Joshua Hammond as surety as guardian of Isaiah Hammond in his 20th year, son of Samuel Hammond, deceased, was filed Feb. 24, 1755. The bond is witnessed by Andrew Boardman and Mary Hammond.
