Born probably at Bedford, Westchester County, NY. Moved to Stamford Connecticut with his parents about 1697. First to use name SLOSSON, although he was referred to a SLASON, SLAWSON and SLASSON. He was left a full orphan in 1706 and removed to Deerfield, Franklin County, Mass. Raised by his mother's relative. After his marriage to Margaret Belding they resided at Norwalk until 1739, when they became part of the original group of settlers at Kent, Litchfield County, Connecticut. Interred in the family cemetery at Kent. He bought nine acres of land at Captain's Plain, in Norwalk, Conn., Feb. 24, 1720-1721; and five acres at Kent, in Norwalk, March 1, 1720-1721; and in each deed was described as of "Deerfield, Mass." He probable began his residence in Norwalk directly after buying the land; for he was called "of Norwalk," Nov. 16, 1721, when Samuel Belden gave him a deed of all of said Belden's right in the undivided lands in Norwalk, "in consideration of the love and good will which I have and do bear toward my loving cousin, Nathaniel Slawson of said Norwalk." He was chosen constable of Kent, Dec. 4, 1739; the town meeting was held at his house Sept. 1, 1740; and in 1744, he was a lister, and his own estate was valued at L55 10S. Moved to Stamford, CT with his parents about 1697. He was left a full orphan in 1706, and removed to Deerfield Franklyn Co., MA, where he was raised by his Mother's relatives. About 1717 or 1718 he returned to Connecticut, and resided in Norwalk, Fairfield County. Married 11 December 1719 at Deerfield to Margret Belding. They resided at Norwalk, mostly in the portion known as Wilton until 1739, when they became part of a group of original settlers at Kent, Litchfield County, Connecticut. He died 8 Mar 1787. They are interred in the family cemetery at Kent, CT.
Nathaniel, after being orphaned, was brought up by Daniel Belding (1648-1731), who was undoubtedly related to his Mother. This is further substantiated by the fact that Daniel Belding had a sister, Susanna, and was therefore in all probability Nathaniel's uncle. Daniel Belding's son was William Belding, who married Margaret Arms, and their eldest child was Margaret Belding, who married Nathaniel. Nathaniel and his wife were, therefore, first cousins, once removed.
With Nathaniel, the SLOSSON spelling of the name is first used, with the
exception of his eldest children (daughters), all the dedcendents of Nathaniel
have used this spelling. His father's (Eleazer's) will mentioning him by name,
was proved under the name SLASON. His marriage record, on file in Deerfield,
gives his name as SLASSON. When he returned from Deerfield to Norwalk with his bride he purchased land on 1 Feb 1720/1 and made a further purchase on 1 Mar 1729/1. In both these deeds he was "NATHANIEL SLASON". On 16 Nov 1721, Samuel Belden (Belding) (for differences of spelling of this name see notes for Eleazer Slason) presented him with a deed for rights in land "in consideration of the love and good will I have and do bear toward my cousin, Nathaniel Slawson, of said Norwalk". This is particularly interesting for two reasons: first; the reference to his "cousin". Previous genealogist, failing to have the connection between Nathaniel's mother and the Belding family, interpred this to mean "cousin" as a result of his marriage to Margaret Belding. Actually, Samuel meant what he stated when he said "cousin", and it is somewhat far reasoning for him to be guilty of publicly stating his "love" for a cousin-in-law. Nor did the donor say "Nathaniel Slawson, husband of my cousin, Margaret Slawson", which would be the usual phraseology in those days of meticulous accuracy as attested by the many documents so worded that are on file for other families, as well as other branches of this family. On close scrutiny, there seems to be no question that Samuel Belden (Belding) was acknowledging the blood relation existing between himself and Nathaniel Slawson.
He bought 9 acres of land at Captain's Plain in Norwalk in 1720 or 1721, 5 acres in Kent; and on 11 Jun 1722 two parcels of land on E side of the E branch of Pimpsewaug River at Pimpsewaug, Norwalk, and on 14 Aug 1729, 1 1/2 acres from his father-in-law, William Belding adjoining his homestead in the Parish of Wilton which included the districts of Kent and Pimpsewaug, CT.
He and Margaret were members of the church at Wilton at the ordination of Rev. Wm. Gaylord 13 Feb 1732-3.
In the first division of lands at Kent in May, 1738, he drew lot #21 about 3
miles NE of Kent village, in the district called Flanders; and tradition says he
settled thereon about 1 Nov 1739. He was chosen constable of Kent 4 Dec 17339.
They joined the church at Kent 12 Jul 1741.

Excerpt from "Slosson Genealogy from Chazy Town Historian": "The progenitor of the first Slossons in America came from England in 1636, lived in Lynn, Mass. for a time then went to Stamford, Conn. Eleazer Slosson of the 4th generation m. Susannah Lucy Benedict; they lived in several places and finally settled in grand Isle, Chittenden County, Vermont, where he died. They had seven children, the three youngest of whom lived in Chazy, New York.
There was a time when the State Road, from Lucius Heaton's to Doty's and the Slosson Road from the east state road to Ichabod Ransoms was all peopled with the Slossons, with the one exception of Deacon Phineas Doane. In the 1830's there was a great exodus of Slossons for the west, tradition saays that thirty-five went in one year and this is fair to believe considering the number of large families in the locality. the descendants of both Thomas and David went west, the descendants of William mostly remained in or around Chazy."

He served in the war of the Revolution; was "a Sergeant Major in the cavalry," and was detailed to the commissary department. He ws at the capture of Burgoyne. He joined the church in Kent, June 1807. He settled on the homestead of his father in Kent, and there died october 5, 1821, aged nearly 83 years.

from previous church, so could not join church at above until censure was
repealed in 2 Jul 1820. It was repealed because censurer confessed lying on his
death bed.

Excerpt from "Slosson Genealogy" by D. Williams Patterson:
His ear-mark for cattle, was recorded in Stockbridge, in March 1768, "a half penny in upper side of both ears"; and he was chosen constable in 1769.
The church book of Stockbridge has the following records: "At a meeting of the church, August 17, 1786, on a complaint exhibited against Enoch Slosson, a member of the church, for charging Capt. Whittlesey with partiality, in giving his evidence under oath, and that he had sworn to that which he (Slosson) had never said or thought.:
"Voted, that is appears to the brethren of this church, that Mr. Slosson has broken Christian rule in making the charge against Capt. Whittlesey, which is contained in the complaint."
"At a meeting of the church, 21st Dec., 1788";---
"Voted, that whereas Mr. Slosson refuses to make the satisfaction which the laws of Christ require for the offenses of which he has been quilty; he be solemnly admonished by the pastor and brethren of the church, to repent of these his sins. The admonition was accordingly immediately given him by the pastor and brethren."
In February 1793, they left Stockbridge, for Brown's Settlement, on the Boston Purchase, with a portion of their children, in company with their son Ezbon, and his family. They reached their destination on the fourth day of March, and began their settlement in a bark-covered shanty, on the bank of the creek, near where Sturtevant's gristmill stands, in the village of Newark Valley, Tioga County, New York. This was the first house built on the site of the village; and the wives of Enoch and Ezbon Slosson, were the first women who dwelt within the limits of the town; and they did not see another woman from the time they came into the place till the next September.
On the 17th of November, 1803, more than ten years after they settled in the wilderness, the first church in Tioga (afterward, the first church in Berkshire, and now the first church in Newark Valley), was formed. Mrs. Slosson, having been granted a letter of dismission from the church in Stockbridge, Oct. 2, 1803, was admitted to this new church, on Sunday after its organization, Nov. 20, 1803; she being the first one admitted. Mr. Slosson could not join with her, as he was still under censure of the Stockbridge church, and so remained until Capt. Whittlesey, on his death-bed, acknowledged the wrong which he had done to Slosson; asking pardon of him and of the church; on which the church sent to Slosson a letter of dismission, on which he joined the church in Berkshire, July 2, 1820. His troubles so wore upon him, that, at times, during the last years of his life, he was subject to mental derangement. His first log house (the bark-roofed shanty belonged to his son) stood where Dr. C.R. Heaton now lives. They were buried in the old burial ground in Berkshire, New York.

"George Slawson" by Harold D. Slosson: Finally news came to Daniel and Keziah that the General Court of Massachusetts had opened for colonization the western part of that state. The area lay just north of them; it was the opportunity they were looking for. the expression "Western Fever," according to one reference, actually originated in Kent, Connecticut. In any event, Daniel contrated it, and in the next year, 1762, the Slossons were again on the migration trail. The specific place of interest to Daniel and Keziah was about midway in western Massachusetts between Connecticut and Vermont, and close to the New York State line. Actually, it was only some fifty miles north of Kent......
Transportation in Colonial days, however, was a real problem. Perhaps at that early day there may have been some kind of a wagon road in the Housatonic River Valley extending for a ways north of Kent. The Slossons' final destination, however, was off the river course, in a primitive and heavily forested area.
It is believed that the Slossons went northward on horseback, pack-train fashion, perhaps driving some stock before them. Most probably it was a three-day journey, with rivers to ford, hills to climb, and forests to ride through, requiring at least two nights of camping out on the way. At night, after their horses were fed and hobbled to keep them from straying, the Slossons ate supper around a lively campfire. Thereafter, with strts as their lamplight, trees as their cover, and pine needles as their mattress, they rolled into blankets for some sound sleep. Early the following morning they would push farther into the forest.
It might also be mentioned that now going through Kent is a footpath - ossibly following an old Indian course - Called the Appalachian Trail, or in some places the "Long trail." Starting in southern United States, it extends some 2000 miles north, almost to the Canadian border. But even this long trail couldn't finally help Daniel and Keziah, since - as before indicated - they eventually would diverge westerly from the trail's north-easterly course......
Daniel's next younger brother, John, and his wife, Hannah, decided to go to this new land also, taking with them their two-year-old daughter, Aldine. Daniel, now the leader, and his wife, Keziah, had with them daughter Eunice, perhaps six years old; their son Jehiel, about three; and Anna, a babe in arms of less than one year.
Finally, the Slossons reached a clearing, the start of a settlement then called Mt. Ephraim, now the present town of Richmond. No grand group of greeters awaited them to point out their allotted land, since at tht time there were screly more than a dozen white men in this immediate area. Captain Micah Mudge and his family came in 1760, and a few more families arrived in 1761. And now the Slossons were the first to arrive in 1762. Not until 1765, after more settlers were there, was the town actually established. Thus the Slossons were among the very first settlers in this section of the Berkshire Hills which had been purchases from the Indians.
In those pioneer days, much political organizing had to be done with the Slossons doing their share. For example, John Slosson is listed on the committee to oversee the construction of the town meetinghouse, a stout, well-built building. It is believed this structure, in excellent repair - including a good coat of white paint - stands to this day. John was also the town clerk for a time, it has been reported.

Thomas's brothers, David and William settled in Chazy, NY, afer 1804, but only
William's descendents seem to have remained in the area. William Slosson was
one of the first settlers going north on the old state road in 1807. The
Slosson cemetery, in use in 1826, is on the east side of old state road - 75
stones.

Excerpt from Chazy Historian: "Thomas is likely the first to have settled here, no date has been ascertained but the genealogy states that all his fifteen children were born in Chazy, the dates of the first seven not given, the eight born in 1810. He was the fifth child of Eleazer born in Addison, VT. 1772 and married Clarissa Belden of Troy NY where she died in 1865 and he died in Aurora, Ill. in 1870. At least three of his children died young, nine went to Aurora, Ill. to live, Julius settled in Mooers and Daniel, several years after his marriage went to Aurora."

to Bennington, Bennigton County, Vermont during the Revolutionary War. He moved
to South Hero, Chttendeon Co., VT where he married Susanna Stark. They moved to
Chazy, Clinton Co., NY, where she died in 1863. William married Sally Baxter, a
widow, who was burned to death 10 Oct 1863 at Chazy.

Incidents at the Slosson Place
Among those who saw considerable of the British,even more than was agreeable, was Wi11am Slosson, who settled on a farm two miles south of Chazy village, in 1807. His son,
Horace Slosson, was then five years old, and has resided on the farm ever since. A portion if the original house, built In 1808, is still standing.
On the British advance, William S1osson was pressed into the service, with his team, to carry baggage from Chazy to Plattsburgh. On their retreat our militia captured five British soldiers and six horses In the vicinity. The British also "gobbled up" Mr. Slossson, and held him prisioner over one night.

as "Sketches of Early Lights of Litchfield Bar" by Hon. David S. Boardman.

As he entered College in the Senior year, he did not shine in the College honors, but availed himself of the right to become a candidate for the honor of "Dean Scholar", and obtained the first premium for excellence in Greek and Latin. He taught for a short time in the Sharon Academy; then studied law with Gov. John Cotton Smith, of Sharon; was admitted to the bar in Fairfield Co., Conn. April 17, 1794. Between Oct. 1797 and Oct. 1812, he represented Kent in the Conn. Legislature, at fifteen sessions.

Notes:

When they came to Boston Purchase, they settled first in a bark-covered shanty, the roof of which slid off one night during a heavy rain, leaving them exposed to the weather. He then built a log-house in which now stands the Congregational Church, in Newark Valley, New York. He also, built the first framed house in the village of Newark Valley.

"Whitney Genealogy": They moved, with his parents, to newark Valley, New York, arriving there 4 March 1793. He built a log-house on the spot now occupied by the conference-room of the Congregational Church. He was the first postmaster of Newark Valley, and built the first framed house in that village, which is yet standing as a part of the old tavern. They died in Newark Valley (he, 2 June 1838; she, 12 Feb. 1853), and were buried in Hope Cemetery. She and her husband's mother were the first women in newark Valley; and for the first six moths of their residence there, they did not see another woman.

"George Slawson - An American Pioneer": Jehiel, the restless Minuteman, after the Revolutionary War, with his wife, Rebecca, left the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts, and crossed the Hudson River into New York State. There in the hills of Greenville, near the Catskills, they farmed and raised their family.
Their new home, Coxsackie, the Slossons found had some patriotic fame, for here the Dutch farmers had made a freedom declaration even before the signing of the American Declaration of Independence.
While living in Coxsackie for some half-dozen years, the couple had two children, Jehiel, Jr., and a daughter, Becky. They are listed in first U.S. Decennial Census, 1790, page 23. But life in that river town did not satisfy Jehiel's restless spirit. It was commercial, and now he remembered the quiet, wooded Berkshire Hills. Again the Slossons wre on the move - westward and northward to the small town of Greenville in New York hills.
Again, the Slossons were early settlers. They had arrived about 1791, and it was not until about 1803 when the setlement once called Freehold was given its present name of Greenville.
Jehiel was a farmer, and probably a craftsman as well. Remote Greenille had varied home industries, it is recorded. Further, two small pieces of handmade Colonial furniture still in the family are believed to have been made by Jehiel in his Greenville home.
Tragedy came, however, when Jehiel at the age of forty-nine passed on. Rebecca met that challenge by leading her seven children in a wagon train westward, down the mountains, through the Susquehanna River Valley to a new life in south-central New York State....
Jehiel was the second child of Daniel and Keziah Slosson. Jehiel's name - probably best pronounces as a "he" in the center - was derived from the Old Testament. Jehiel appears in Chronicles as the son of Good King Jehoshaphat.
Finally, on January 22, 1807, the ather, Jehiel, when he was only forty-nine years old, answered the final call. His restless spirit had made that final trip. And two weeks later, his fifteen-year-old girl, Sally, also passed away. The cause of their demise is not known. Jehiel might have had a war disability, or again, a wintertime epidemic may have swept through that area, where the closed doctor may have been miles away.
Rebecca was now a widow with seven dependent children. Doubtless Jehiel left her with a reasonably good farm and their homestead. ...
News of her plight slowly went to relatives in various places. Meanwhile, she pondered what would be best for her children. Finally word was received from Jehiel's uncle, Enoch Slosson, suggesting that her family come to live near him in the south-central part of New York State. Summarized from century-old notes written by William patterson, who had married into the family, here is why Enoch turned out to be the benefactor of Rebecca's family.
Years before, bread had been cast on the waters in the Slosson family. Third-generation Nathaniel had been given a land gift by his father-in-law. Nathaniel, in turn, had given some land to his son, fourth-generation Enoch. And now Enoch was volunteering to help the family of his nephew, fifth-generation Jehiel.
However, it was an unusual cause-and-effect story whereby Enoch happened to be living in New York state in a position to offer Rebecca assistance. years before he had followed his brother Daniel into the Berkshire Hills. There, in Stockbridge, as a respected citizen, he had been elected constable, the position his father had similarly held in Kent.
In connection with his official duties, Enoch accused a captain of partiality in giving evidence under oath. The church took the captain's side; Enoch stood by his convictions, and so had been admonished by the church.
Perhaps because of this treatment, in 1793 Enoch moved with some of his family into the wilderness area at Brown's Settlement on the Boston Settlement on the Boston purchase in Newark Valley in Tioga County south-central new York State. There he pioneered and apparently prospered with the growth of the area. Subsequently, the Stockbridge captain, on his deathbed, confessed the wrong he had done to Slosson, who was then pardoned by the church. Thus Enoch was well able to help Rebecca. Completing his life story, although distressed by his church troubles, he lived to the age of ninety-four.
After receiving the Enoch Slosson offer to join his family, Rebecca reflected that it might be easier simpl to remain in Greenville. but that hll area was rather isolated with limited opportunies for her children. Again, she could backtrack to the Berkshire Hills or to Connecticut where many friends and relatives were living.
But Enoch's location was in a new land with plenty of space for her family to grow and develop. Further, and this was important, it was in the direction her restless Jehiel had been headed.
And so Rebecca decided - she would continue that long journey to the west.....
Rebecca Slosson had a full, adventurous life. Finally, at Union (now Newark Valley) on May 29, 1827, at the age of sixty-eight, she passed on to be with the Lord. The burial place is given as near Naticoke Springs, Broome County, New York

During the two years 1858 and 1859, a number of new families located in the Des Moines settlement, among whom were David Slosson, John A. James, Perry Nowlen, Henry and William Jarvis, Ora Harvey, .F. Avery, James Edelman, Hank Brown and John Straight.

David Slosson, in May 1858, came to Pocahontas county, with a family consisting of his wife, Esther Vaughan, who died in 1875, three sons - Oscar, Orland and Edmond - all of whom were young men, and one daughter, Ann, who became the wife of Eomeyn B. Fish and is still a resident of the county. On his arrival, David Slosson located on section 26, and on September 28, 1858, entered his preemption claim for lots 1 and 2 and the W1/2NE1/4 of that section, containing 158 acres. His eldest son, Oscar Slosson, December 8, 1860, entered as a pre-emption the SE1/4 Sec. 24, 160 acres, same township, and received the patent for it June 1, 1861; and Orlando, the second son, on January 18 1868, entered as a homestead the NW1/2 Sec. 26, 160 acres, same township and received the patent for it September 1, 1869.

David Slosson was the son of David and Esther (Vaughan) Slosson, his father being of Welsh and his mother of English descent. He was a native of Vermont, where he was born march 11, 1811, near Grand Isle. He received a good common school education, and when quite young moved to New York state, where he learned the shoemakers' trade.

At twenty he married Rachel Vaughan, a cousin, and during the next five years worked at his trade during the winter and on the farm during the summer. He then moved to Summit count, Ohio - later to Clinton County, New York, and in 1846 returned to Summit county, Ohio. The next move was to Michigan, and in 1852 he came to Clinton county, Iowa, where he remained until the time of settlement in this county in 1858.

His next move was to Washington Territory, where his three sons - Oscar married to Julia Towslee, Orlando married to Harriet Halstead and Edmond married to Ellen Savage - still reside. He died there June 30, 1884. His daughter, Mrs. R.B. Fish, resides at Rolfe.

At the time of the organization of this county, David Slosson had the honor to be chosen the first County Judge and served in that capacity from march 21st, the day he qualified, to Dec. 31, 1859. the duties devolving upon this officer were those that are now performed by the Board of County Supervisors. As there was no public building in the county his cabin, which was somewhat central in the Des Moines settlement, became the seat of government for the county, and the public records were kept there until the erection of the first court house, in the fall of 1860.

His administration of the affairs of this county, though limited to a period less than one year, was unusually eventful and has been rendered memorable by thee important contracts that were concluded by him in behalf of the county. These contracts related to the erection of the first court house at Old Rolfe, the construction of the first bridge over the Des Moines river and the special survey of the swamp lands of the county that they might be given in payment for the public building and bridge.

The law creating the Board of County Supervisors was enacted in 1860, and in 1861 he had the honor to serve as a member of the first Board of County Supervisors. He also served on his Board during the years 1863 to '67, 1870 to '71 and 1874 to '79, making a period of nearly thirteen years that he served in this capacity, the longest of any inucmbent in that office.

Chazy, NY: in 1832 Daniel and Aretas Slosson, Ephraim Farnsworth and James Stark
were set off to the newly created District of Chazy. By 1842 thet district had
become known as the Slosson District. On 30 Jun 1845 the site was deeded to the
school trustees for $5 by Heman and Rhoda Slosson.
A Daniel Slosson of Chazy had kept a hotel as early as 1841 in a building owned
by George Lesley south of Scott's store or what is now (Chazy) the Colonial
Houme; he had a call house and a bowling alley. By 1846 Slosson had a
partnership with his brother Edward. On 16 Jan of that year they were before
the authorities on the report that they had a gaming house and a pool table as
well as the bowling alley. Daniel Slosson kept the Fillmore Hotel until at least
1854.

Hon. Barzillai Slosson, an old and at one time very prominent citizen of Geneva, died at that place on Saturday, the 27th ult. His age was sixty-four years. He died very suddenly, about twenty minutes after the attack - probably of heart disease.

"George Slawson: An American Pioneer" by Harold D. Slosson: Abner was getting older, and in that day of early marriages was probably called an old bachelor by his friends. Finally, at the age of thirty-three, he had a romance with a local girl, being married on March 14, 1833, to Nancy Marean. the years likewise had been moving by for Nancy, who was two years older than Abner, having been born on July 11, 1798, the daughter of Thomas and Esther (Patterson) Marean.
Nancy's folks - The Pattersons and the Mareans - were pioneers in that area, having arrived in 1786, the year after Binghampton was founded. At the time of their arrival, according to old notes, there were only four houses in that area.....
Abner's home at Newark Valley was only about a dozen miles from these commercially promising cities. But he did not feel the urge to join them in their growth. Rather, he and Nancy, after marriage, moved a short way to the east to another small village called Maine, just over the line in Broome County. He has been handed down to the writer that Abner's farm was a good one. Also, that it was close in, being only a mile from the village.
Nancy and Abner had three children, born and raised on their farm, as follows: John Marean Slosson, born March 29, 1835, ...;Rebecca Emily Slosson, born the next year, was later married to Eldad Barber; and finally came Albert Slosson, born in 1838, who never married.
The Abner Slossons, as near as is known, had a successful but rather uneventful life on their farm, probably helping with church and community affairs. finally, on March 2, 1865 - just a month before the close of the Civil War - Nancy passed on. Shortly afterward Abner sold his farm, as did his son, Albert, and then, together with Abner's daughter Rebecca Barber, they moved west to Northwood, Iowa, to be with Abner's first-born son, John Marean Slosson, already established there.
It is believed that this change in location was in the nature of a retirement, "moving to town." Finally, in 1877, at the age of seventy-seven years, Abner passed on to his reward. His son, Albert, lived until 1904, with his sister, Rebecca, having passed away sometime after her marriage to Eldad Barber in 1883.
