Excerpt from NEHG Reg 1908, Vol 62: Graduated at Hamilton College, NY, in 1817, studied law at Batavia, NY, and was in law practice there. He was elected in 1832 to the US House of Representatives, 23rd and 24th Congress, where he was on intimate terms with Adams, Webster, and other public men, and was Representative in 1842, from Genesee Co., to the New York Assembly. He served as U.S. minister to Sweden and Norway, and received the honorary degree of A.M. from Yale in 1860.
