John De Mowbray, Knt., 4th Lord Mowbray of Axholme, co. Lincoln, son and heir, was born at Epworth on 25 June 1340. He was knighted in July 1335 when the King was with his fleet in the Downs on his way to an invasion of France. Next year he served in the Brittany campaign. He was summoned to parliament from 14 Aug 1362. "John de Mowbray, knt., lord of Axiholm", died testate, being slain by the Turks in Thrace near Constantinople on 9 Oct 1368.

Thomas De Mowbray, Int., K.G., 6th Lord Mowbray, younger son, was born on 22 Mar 1365/6, and was brother and heir of John De Mowbray. He was created Earl of Nottingham on 12 Feb 1382/3, Earl Marshal on 30 June 1385, and Duke of Norfolk on 29 Sep 1397. He was married for the first time to Elizabeth Strange, Baroness Strange of Blackmere 'suo jure', daughter and heiress of John Strange, Lord Strange of Blackmere. She died in her tenth year on 23 Aug 1383 s.p. He married for the second tie at Arundel Castle in the presence of the King and Queen in July 1384 to Elizabeth Fitz Alan, widow of William Montagu, styled Lord Montagu. She was born in 1375. He served under his father-in-law in the naval victory over the French, Spanish and Flemish fleets off Margate on 24 Mar 1386/7. On his return from the Holy Land Thomas De Mowbray, Duke of Norfolk, died of the pestilence at Venice, Italy, on 22 Sep 1399, and was buried in the abbey of St. George there.

She was, while about to appeal to the King in Council on behalf of her husband, arrested by order of Margaret, Countess of Shrewsbury (granddaughter and co-heiress of the last Lord Berkeley, and step-mother of James de Berkeley's fourth wife), and imprisoned at Gloucester, where she died on 23 Sep 1452 and was buried in the church of the Greyfriars there.

A firm Lancastrian, he was taken prisoner by the Yorkists at Blore Heath on 23 Sep 1459, and was with Queen Margaret's army which won St. Albans on 17 Feb1460/1. Lionel De Welles, Lord Welles, was slain testate aged fifty-five at the Battle of Towton on 29 Mar 1461, and was buried with his first wife at Methley.

John Howard, Knt., K.G., Sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk, and of Oxfordshire, M.P. for Norfolk, son and heir, succeeded his father in 1436. He served in the war in France in 1452-53. He was a zealous Yorkist, and was knighted by King Edward IV at the Battle of Towton on 29 Mar 1461. Under King Edward IV he held many important appointments. he was summoned to Parliament from 15 Oct 1470 by writs directed 'Johanni Howard de Howard, militi', whereby he is held to have become Lord Howard. By the death in 1481 of his cousin Anne, daughter and sole heiress of John de Mowbray, Duke of Norfolk, he became in right of his mother a co-heir and succeeded a portion of the extensive Mowbray estates. He was created Duke of Norfolk and marshal and Earl Marshal of England on 28 June 1483. Sir John Howard led the van (of archers) at the battle of Bosworth Field, where he was slain on 22 Aug 1475, burial, eventually, at Thetford.
