2. | Benjamin CRANE (1.?1) was born about 1630 in Wethersfield, Hartford Co., Connecticut; died on 31 May 1691. Notes:
Name:
Benjamin Crane, was in Wethersfield, Conn., as early as 1655, and may have been there a few years earlier. According to the Records of the Particular Court, held at Hartford, March, 1655, he is defendant in a civil suit with John Sadler, pltf.; also in June 1656, he is defendant in another suit with Richard Montague. He was born about 1630; was made freeman May 12, 1658, at Wethersfield, It is not positively known from whence he came to Wethersfield, but Hinman in his "History of Connecticut Settlers" seems to think that he came from Massachusetts, which statement all investigations thus far seem to warrant. February 24, 1656, the town gave him a home lot of 2 1/2 acres, more or less, bounded by the Common N.W., a brook and the home lot of John Graves N.E., the Common S.E., the highway S.W. He also bought John Dixon's or Dickenson's land in the West Field, Sept. 14, 1664. The latter is said to have removed to Hadley 1659 or 1660. It appears that this last mentioned tract of land was that on which the late home of Sam'l Coleman, deceased, stands, on Mud Lane. It was there when Mr. Crane built his dwelling-house and tanneries. The house was one of the six houses fortified by vote of the town in 1704. The town also gave him three acres of land on Beaver, now Tando's, Brook, 1660; served as juror 1664; drew land in the allotment of 1670, and purchased land of Daniel Rose, Dec. 8,1671. January 15, 1673, he is rated among inhabitants of Wethersfield to pay the town 0-4-5 1/2; acquires more land next south of Job Whitcomb's, February 22, 1680, March 25, 1680, July 13, 1680; under latter date the land is located on the Connecticut River on road to Middletown and road to Rocky Hill.
May, 1682, Benjamin Crane wit others petitioned the General Court for liberty to "erect a plantation in the Wabaynassit country" (Windham County). It was proposed to have a "Town Grant" ten miles square.
He married Mary Backus, daughter of William and Sarah (Charles) Backus, April 23, 1655, and carried on the tanning business about a mile below the village on the Middletown road. The spot for many years has been known as "Old Crane's Tannery Place." At his death, May 31, 1691, his son John succeeded to the business.
Benjamin married Mary BACKUS on 23 Apr 1655. Mary died on 8 Jul 1717. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

6. | John CRANE (3.Henry2, 1.?1) was born about 1664; died in Oct 1711. Notes:
Name:
He in many respects was much like his father, an intelligent, self-reliant, enterprising man. In all his endeavors and aspirations thoroughly devoted to the general good of the public. Although he was cut down in middle life, yet by virtue of the confidence reposed i him by his fellow-citizens he already had assumed the high position in the affairs of states which his father had so long and acceptably occupied before him. In minor public matters Mr. Crane was also ever ready to contribute his full share of time ad energy.
He was delegate to the General Court for thirteen sessions, from 1703 to 1711, the year of his death. In 1708 he received a captain's commission, and went in command of a company with the expedition under the command of General Sir Francis Nicholson against Canada, which proved so unsuccessful, in the year 1711. Captain Crane returned with his company as far as New York, which place they reached in the month of October on their way home. Worn out and completely exhausted, and diseased in consequence of the exposures and hardships attending this disastrous campaign he was unable to journey further, and died in New York, October, 1711, and was there honored with a State funeral.

9. | Theophilus CRANE (3.Henry2, 1.?1) was born on 5 Jan 1674; died on 24 Oct 1732. Notes:
Name:
Nov. 13, 1711, after the death of his brother, Capt. John Crane, he was appointed administrator of his father's estate. April 8, 1712, he rendered account of the estate to the Probate Court at New London, the original paper now (1880) being on file at that office, made out and signed in this own handwriting. His share of the personal property was L22 1s. 6p, and as the homestead of his father, Capt. Henry
Crane, could not be divided at this time without injury, the court ordered it to Theophilus at an appraised valuation, he to pay the remaining heirs for their portions of the estate within two years from date, April 8, 1711, with interest at six per cent per annum. by this we lear that he purchased the old homestead and we presume resided there. The town records give him the title of sergeant. He died Oct. 24, 1732, leaving a will which he executed March 29, 1731.
