    Edmund Sutton/Dudley married Joyce Tiptoft, third and youngest daughter of John Tiptoft, Lord Tiptoft, by his second wife, Joyce, younger daughter and co-heiress of Edward Cherleton, Lord Cherleton. She was sister of John, Earl of Worcester. Through this alliance the Lords Dudley became co-heirs of the Baronies of Tibetot and of Cherleton. They had two sons and a daughter.

    They had five sons and three daughters, and presumably resided in Tothill Street, Westminster. he succeeded his father in 1532 and immediately began to sell his patrimony. He was never summoned to Parliament.


    Note by Author of Plantagenet Ancestry: It is reported by credible tradition of this John Lord Dudley, that being a weak man of understanding, whereby he had exposed himself to some wants, and so became entangled in the usurer's bonds, John Dudley, then Viscount Lisle and Earl of Warwick (afterwards Duke of Northumberland), thirsting after dudley Castle, the chief seat of the family, made those money merchants his instruments to work him out of it, which by some mortgage being at length effected, this poor lord became exposed to the charity of his friends for a subsistence, and spending the remainder of his life in visits amongst them, was commonly called the Lord "Quondam".

  1. 8.  Capt Henry DUDLEY, Knt. Descendancy chart to this point (5.John3, 2.Edward2, 1.Edmund1) was born about 1517; died between 1568 and 1570.

    Name:
    Capt. Henry Dudley, Knt., second son, was born about 1517, and was named by his grandmother, Cecily, Marchioness of Dorset, in her will, dated 6 May 1527. He was monastic auditor under Cromwell in 1535, and a soldier in Ireland in 1536 under his uncle Leonard Grey. He was a soldier in Scotland, say, 1540-3. He married, say, 1545-50, perhaps at Boulogne, to ?Ashton, daughter of Christopher Ashton, Sr., of Fyfield, co. Berks. There is no record of any children. he fought valiantly at the siege of Boulogne in 1544, and was Captain from early 1545 when Edward Fiennes, Lord Clinton, was Chief Captain. He was Vice Admiral of the Narrow Seas 1552-3 when Edward Fiennes was Admiral. He was knighted at Hampton Court on 11 Oct. 1551. He was a close associate of his second cousin, (with, among others, his father-in-law) in the rebellion of Robert's father, John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland. Henry Dudley was jailed in the Tower of London, and received a pardon fro Queen Mary on 18 Oct. 1553. He was exiled in French service 1556-1563, but was in English service as "Capt. Dudley" in 1563, receiving an annuity later the same year from Queen Elizabeth "for his service". In 1567 he obtained from the Queen a year's protection from his creditors (renewed for two years in 1568).
