On 13 May 1786, he joined the Westerly Church; 26 February 1788, he and Wealthy, his wife, deeded to (?) land at Westerly, R.I. 24 August, 1792, he and Wealthy, his wife, deeded to Clarke Stillman land at Westerly. 6 January, 1806, he received a deed from his brother, Elisha Clarke, of Leyden, Mass., of interest in land owned by father, Elisha Clarke, deceased. 7 january, 1806, he received a deed from his brother, Luke Clarke, of Petersburgh, NY, of interest in land owned by father, Elisha Clarke, deceased. He also had deeds from John and wife, Mercy, and Lewis Clarke, of Westerly (recorded Liber 13, p. 433). 7 April, 1806, he recorded a deed from his brother, George Clarke, of Middleton, R.I., of his interest in father's land; 2 June 1809, he recorded a deed from his brother, Thomas Clarke, of Leyden, Mass., for his interest in father's estate (Deeds, Book 1, pp. 212-213, 243, 245, 433).
On 11 August 1809, he purchased all the rights of his brothers in his father, Elisha's estate; 1813, he and his wife, Wealthy, deeded land conveyed above to him to various parties (Deeds, Book 13, pp. 433; 14-142, 158, 178, 156) (this land is fully described in Westerly Records, Book 13, p. 433).

He and his wife were buried in Clarke Burial Ground, on bank of Pawcatuck River, 3 1/2 miles east of Westerly, near what is now called the Hopkinton Seventh Day Baptist Burial Ground. On 29th September, 1788, Paul Clake of Newport, R.I., deeded to Benjamin Clarke, of Stonington, Conn., certain Connecticut land. He enlisted on 27th November, 1776, in Capt. Humphreys' Co. of R.I. Miltia in the battalion commanded by Col. Israel Angel, and became Corporal. He served six years six months and eighteen days, received two honorary badges and was promoted to Captain in 1782.

He went to Newport when a youth and engaged in the West India Trade, forming the firm of "Clarke & Hammond" He amassed a fortune and went to East Greenwich, R.I., where he died at an advanced age. He took an active interest in starting the Greenwich Academy and subscribed for ten shares. He invested largely in real estate in the South, owning property in Georgia, Florida, Ohio and Tennessee, and was accustomed to drive from his home in Greenwich to St. Marys, Georgia, in his own coach, accompanied by his negro servant Caesar. He was president of the East Greenwich, R.I., Bank. On 28 June 1775, Capt. Ethan Clarke was chosen for one (9th Co., R.I. Army of Observation) of the six additional companies raised by Rhode Island for service during the Revolutionary War. On 28 March 1778, he was administrator on estate of Samuel Ward, deceased, and on 10 april, 1780, he and Anne, his wife, deeded to Henry Clarke land in Hopkinton, near Pardon Clarke's land. On the 19 September, 1776, Henry Clarke and Joshua Clarke were in a list of signers to a declaration of patriotism at Hopkinton, R. I.
He worked on his father's farm as a boy and later learned the trade of a blacksmith. He and his wife joined the Hopkinton Baptist Church on 19 June 1779. On 9 December, 1782, he and Caty, his wife, as of Hopkinton, deeded certain land at Hopkinton, R.I. He was ordained a Deacon in 1788, and an evangelist on 3 September, 1793. He resided over ten years at Hopkinton, R.I., and at least four in Stonington, Conn. On 2 May 1795, he settled at Brookfield, N.Y., on a large unimproved farm which he had bought and remained there thirty-six years. he was installed Pastor of the First Seventh Day Baptist Church of Brookfield, N.Y., on 16 October, 1797, and filled this position until April, 1822. He occasionally preached for the Church up to his death, which occurred in the seventy-fifth year of his age. In 1811 he published "AHistory of the Sabbatarians or Seventh Day Baptists in America," a work o much study and research. He also wrote "A Scriptural and Reasonable System of Religion," but it was never printed.
