David Slosson, in May 1858, came to Pocahontas county, with a family consisting of his wife, Esther Vaughan, who died in 1875, three sons - Oscar, Orland and Edmond - all of whom were young men, and one daughter, Ann, who became the wife of Eomeyn B. Fish and is still a resident of the county. On his arrival, David Slosson located on section 26, and on September 28, 1858, entered his preemption claim for lots 1 and 2 and the W1/2NE1/4 of that section, containing 158 acres. His eldest son, Oscar Slosson, December 8, 1860, entered as a pre-emption the SE1/4 Sec. 24, 160 acres, same township, and received the patent for it June 1, 1861; and Orlando, the second son, on January 18 1868, entered as a homestead the NW1/2 Sec. 26, 160 acres, same township and received the patent for it September 1, 1869.
David Slosson was the son of David and Esther (Vaughan) Slosson, his father being of Welsh and his mother of English descent. He was a native of Vermont, where he was born march 11, 1811, near Grand Isle. He received a good common school education, and when quite young moved to New York state, where he learned the shoemakers' trade.
At twenty he married Rachel Vaughan, a cousin, and during the next five years worked at his trade during the winter and on the farm during the summer. He then moved to Summit count, Ohio - later to Clinton County, New York, and in 1846 returned to Summit county, Ohio. The next move was to Michigan, and in 1852 he came to Clinton county, Iowa, where he remained until the time of settlement in this county in 1858.
His next move was to Washington Territory, where his three sons - Oscar married to Julia Towslee, Orlando married to Harriet Halstead and Edmond married to Ellen Savage - still reside. He died there June 30, 1884. His daughter, Mrs. R.B. Fish, resides at Rolfe.
At the time of the organization of this county, David Slosson had the honor to be chosen the first County Judge and served in that capacity from march 21st, the day he qualified, to Dec. 31, 1859. the duties devolving upon this officer were those that are now performed by the Board of County Supervisors. As there was no public building in the county his cabin, which was somewhat central in the Des Moines settlement, became the seat of government for the county, and the public records were kept there until the erection of the first court house, in the fall of 1860.
His administration of the affairs of this county, though limited to a period less than one year, was unusually eventful and has been rendered memorable by thee important contracts that were concluded by him in behalf of the county. These contracts related to the erection of the first court house at Old Rolfe, the construction of the first bridge over the Des Moines river and the special survey of the swamp lands of the county that they might be given in payment for the public building and bridge.
The following item from the record is of interest as showing the salary of the Judge and his systematic method of keeping the record:
STATE OF IOWA
Pocahontas Co.,
County Court
July 9, A.D. 1859
On this day, I, David Slosson,County Judge of said county, drew a warrant for $12.50 for one (the first) quarter's salary fee.
David Slosson
County Judge
The law creating the Board of County Supervisors was enacted in 1860, and in 1861 he had the honor to serve as a member of the first Board of County Supervisors. He also served on his Board during the years 1863 to '67, 1870 to '71 and 1874 to '79, making a period of nearly thirteen years that he served in this capacity, the longest of any inucmbent in that office.

Wausau record - Herald, August 22, 1932 pg 5
TUTTLE FAMILY IS AMONG THE EARLY COMERS TO COUNTY
Mr. and Mrs. John Tuttle Sr. Came to Wausau When It was a Logging Camp
MARRIED HERE IN 1853
Mrs. Tuttle Was First Shool Teacher Employed in School in Village
The following infrmation is furnished by George A. tuttle relative to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John tuttle Sr., pioneer settlers in Marathon County.
The Homecoming has brought many persons to Wausau who are discussing topics with home friends concerning pioneers and dates of their arrival in this commnity, and in order that historical records that may be compiled in the future be as nearly accurate as it is possible to make them, I desire to submit some data regarding my parents.
First let me mention some facts about father, John Tuttle Sr. he was born in Warren county, Pennsylvania July 22, 1829. In 1850 he left Pennsylvania and came to Wausau when it was little more than a logging camp and the population principally Indians. He lived here continuously up to the time of his death which occurred February 21, 1900. He was interested in the lumber industry and was one of the founders of the Parcher, J. and A. Stewart company saw mill that was located on the west bank of the Wisconsin river in the northern part of Wausau, known as "Parcherville." When the company was first organized, the firm name was Stewart, Tuttle & Parcher.
The late E.B. Thayer Sr. compiled the following information about my mother, and, as she was the first public school teacher in Wausau, that information should prove interesting along, with other statements of Mr. Thayer's who said that "Mrs. Mary S. Tuttle was born in Chazy, Clinton county, New York, August 16, 1830. Herman Slosson, father of Mrs. tuttle was a school teacher until forty-five years of age. he died at Fairwater, Wis. Mrs. Tuttle's mother was born in 1801 in New York state and died there in 1884.
"Mrs. Tuttle came west to visit in Chicago in 1853. She had a brother living in Wausau, Lorenzo W. Slosson, who went to Chicago and induced her to make the trip to Wausau. At that time no trains were running farther north than Belvidere, Ill. From that place to Stevens Point the trip had to be made by stage which took one week. They arrived in Stevens Point just too late to take the stage to Wausau which only made one trip weekly. They started out to make Knowlton by canoe and had only been out two hours when it commenced to rain and the canoe took leak and they had a hard time keeping afloat until they reached the Wylie hotel. They remained there one week, waiting for the stage which on that particular trip was driven by Charles A. Single, who was conducting the Forest House in Wausau.
"The trip was made to Wausau over a road that was very rough; the horses had to walk all the way, and it took from early in the morning until late in the evening to reach Wausau. Mrs. Tuttle remained at the house of her brother, A.L. Slosson, and taught the first public school here in 1852, commencing in July and continuing until February 1853. the school building stood near the hill on Fourth St. leading to the old Northwestern depot. She had eight scholars enrolled which were all the children here at the time. the wages paid at that time were four dollars a week. Miss Kate Fellow of Chazy, New York was a teacher in a select school just before Mrs. Tuttle arrived."
Mother met father in Wausau, then Big bull Falls, and the were married here in 1853. She died in Minneapolis at the home of her son, W.E. Tuttle, December 26, 1913.

Sheriffs of the County
The first Sheriff of Pocahontas county was Oscar Slosson, who was elected March 15, 1859. On Jan. 1, 1860, Henry Jarvis succeeded him and being re-elected in 1861, 1864 (for one year - an unexpired term) and in 1865, filled that office seven years, 1860 to 163, and 1865 to 1867. For the term commencing Jan. 1, 1864, he was not a candidate, and Abiel Stickney, who had been elected, having resigned the office March 21, 1864, Edward Hammond, by appointment of the board of supervisors on that date, performed the duties of that office until the end of that year.
It is of interest to note that Abiel Stickney was the one candidate in this county who was elected by the soldier vote. At the general election of Oct. 13, 1863, the home vote for the candidates for sheriff was as follows: John A. James, 16 votes; Abiel Stickney, 14, and John A. James was declared elected by a majority of two votes. But one month later when the four soldier votes were canvassed and all of them were in favor of Stickney, they gave him a majority of two votes and he was then declared elected.
On Jan. 1, 1868, Oscar Slosson became the successor of Henry Jarvis, and being re-elected in 1869, served four years, 868 to 1871. At the general election held in the fall of 1867, the contest for sheriff became a very spirited one and each of the candidates, Oscar Slosson and George Spragg, received 50 of the 100 votes polled in the county at that election. On drawing cuts the tie was decided in favor of Oscar Slosson.
Pioneer Period, 1855 to 1869 - Other important events
At their meeting held Jan. 2, 1865, the board agreed yo pay a bounty of $900 to each volunteer who would enter the army or navy of the United States, and the later records show hat Dennis Quigley and Thos. Quigley were recipients of this special bounty. This volunteer 'bounty' fund was raised by an assessment of four mills on the dollar during the year of 1865. A soldiers' 'relief' fund of two mills on the dollar had been raised for the benefit of those who had enlisted at the beginning of the war, namely:
A.H. Malcom
Oscar Slosson
Chas. W. Jarvis
W.S. Fegles
Henry Cooper
Henry Tilley
Hiram Evans
John Gayler
Andrew Mills
'For those true men who fought to lift
Our country's banner high in air,
Wreaths of lilies we weave and bring
Roses and star-eyed pansies fair.'
During the war, Pocahontas county furnished eleven men, which was one-third of the able-bodies residents of the county at the time. This was her full quota and there was no need of a resort to a draft.
Four of those named above, namely A.H. Malcolm, Henry Cooper, Hiram Evans and Oscar Slosson enlisted at the same time - Sept 2, 1861, at Fort Dodge - and became members of Co. A, 11th Pennsylvania Volunteers, under Capt. Franklin A. Stratton, of Fort Dodge. This company went by stage to Cedar Falls, the nearest railroad station, and in due season arrived at Dubuque where they were mustered in, September 21st, following.

NORTHERN NEW YORK - Genealogical and family history of northern New York;
GEORGE FRANKLIN, fourth son of Stephen W. and Mary (Cooper) Slosson, was born March 5, 1854, in DeKalb. At the early age of eight years he left home and went to Ogdensburg, where he was employed in a billiard room. He subsequently served in the same manner in Watertown, Rochester, and Cleveland, Ohio, going to the latter place when fifteen years of age.
Although his opportunities for attending school were very limited, he has been a reader and student of men and affairs, and is thoroughtly well informed and abreast of the times. At sixteen years of age he became cashier of the largest billiard room in the world, located at Chicago.
His total attendance at school did not exceed thrity days, but he was accustomed to study while riding on trains and at night. He was accustomed to work in the billard room from eight in the morning until one o'clock of the following morning, yet in the midst of this strenuous life, and in spite of the temptations to idleness attendant on such a life, and as a natural consequence of his short hours of rest, he kept on with his studies, and is among the best informed men of the present (1910) day.
He first opened a billard room on his own account in a small room on Vesey street, New York City, and subsequently conducted a billard room at 171 Monroe Street, Chicago, and Oct 9, 1887, took possession of his present place, which had been opened in 1863, at 22d street and Broadway, New York City.
In the meantime his fame as a billarist had become world-wide, and he traveled about the world entering contests, and crossed the ocean thirty times, and has long been known as champion of the world in all styles of billiard playing. is establishment in New hyork is one of the finest of its kind, having the best equipment that money can procure, and is daily thronged by people interested in that line of amusement, Mr. Slosson is a man of open and candid nature, of democratic habits and is known and esteemed by many people on both sides of the Atlantic ocean.
He is liberal in religious belief, and classes himself as independent in politics, usually voting the Democratic ticket in local matters and sustaining the Republican party in general elections.
He married (first) October, 1886, in Chicago, Heley Foley, a native of that city, who died in 1887, leaving daughter, Katherine, who now resides with her father. He married (second) 1881, in St. Louis, Missouri, Helen Hogan, born in Chicago, daughter of ohn and Mary Hogan of that city.

Notes:
Name:
Taken from the Blue Rapids Centennial 1870-1970 Booklet.
Dr. Rollin S. Fillmore, born in Illinois on December 22, 1854, and passed away November 1, 1944. He lost both his parents when he was young and made his home for a time with his Aunt Cass and Uncle Frederich Merrill. While attending normal school, his desire was to study medicine, probably because his father was a physician.
In later years he enrolled in Missouri Medical College. After his first year in medical college he opened an office under tutelage of Dr. L.P. Stookey in the town of Fayettville, Illinois. In the fall he returned to Medical College and remained until graduation. On December 21, 1885, he was united in marriage to Miss Ada Louise Burn. To this union three children were born, Louise Eupheme, Rollin Slossin, Jr. and Benjamin Dewitt. Louise married Dr. R.W. Weston.
Dr. and Mrs. Fillmore located in Blue Rapids and for forty-six years was our doctor here and to our adjoining towns of Irving, Bigelow, Frankfort, Waterville, Marysville and Cleburne, also the surrounding county.
Physicians' fees and physicians' collections are entirely different things. With a country doctor, long hours and small fees usually went together.
In early days, doctors made the charge of one dollar per visit and that included the medicine. In the country they charged one dollar per visit and fifty cents a mile.
Dr. Fillmore believes his largest fee was $450.00 but this was for several weeks attendance on the patient.
In his day, he received for his services, such things as a goat, small potatoes, sugar, and etc., not always money. His means of transportation, first on horseback and carried the old fashion saddlebag. He then drove a team of stallions, then later a team of small horses. In 1908, he got his first new car, a Rambler he bought at Kansas City, Missouri.
He retired from practice of medicine in 1929 and he and Mrs Fillmore went to Long Beach, California to make their home.
Dr. Fillmore was a member of the Masonic Fraternity, Eastern Star, Knights of Pyhias, Woodmen and Royal Neighbors. He also was a member of the Township Board, City Council, School Board and in church activities.

They had four sons, Roy, Henry, Stiles and Albert Laurie. Roy was born in Chicago and the other three boys were born in Jetmore, Kansas. The Slossons and Leroy Firman sold their property in Kansas and moved to Montana City, Montana. It was just a dot on the map between Helena and Boulder and the boys had to go to Boulder to high school. Laurie, Bill's father, was in the same class as Anna Larson, daughter of Nels and Agda Olson Larson of Boulder and they were married in 1918 in Butte, Montana. Bill's Larson grandfather was a rancher. He homesteaded the ranch in 1890 and Bill's cousin, Don Larson is still on the property."

Notes:
Name:
Fred Slosson is an example of what will and pluck, supplemented by an application to work in hand, can do. Out of the woody wilderness of Puget sound he has literally carved a handsome competence within comparatively few years. Born in Pocahontas County, Iowa, in 1872, the son of a veteran of the Civil War, young Slosson has med his way since thirteen years of age. Oscar Slosson, his father, was a native of New York, but went to Ohio when eighteen years old. In 1854 he removed to Iowa and followed farming. In 1862 he went to Pennsylvania and there responding to the call of President Lincoln for volunteers, enlisted in the Eleventh Pennsylvania Cavalry and served throughout the war with that command. After the grand review and muster out, he turned his face once more to the plains of Iowa, where he remained until 1878, when he went to California. Hearing of the Puget sound country Mr. Slosson left California after a year's residence, came to Skagit county and settled on a farm near La Conner, where he continued until his death in 1904. Julia (Touslee) Slosson was the other of nine children of whom Fred is the seventh. Mrs. Slosson was a native of Ohio and died at La Conner in 1904. Fred Slosson received his education in the schools of Skagit county, but did not have the opportunity of pushing his studies to the extent he desired. His father being of infirm health, the young man was earl called from school to the sterner duties of life. For the greater part of his life young Slosson has made a business of clearing land of the big forests, doing a contract business, in which he as gained an enviable reputation. When he first commenced his operations that section of Skagt county where he resides was a huge forest. it was during these years that Mr. Slosson cleared his present farm of sixty acres. Among the contracting enterprises which he successfully carried to completion was the construction of four miles of the Gray's Harbor branch of the Northern Pacific railroad, which work was finished in seven months. With the exception of one business trip to Chicago Mr. Slosson has remained on the sound since he first reached there.
In 1895 Mr. Slosson married Miss Ethel Touslee, daughter of Horace Touslee, a veterinary surgeon of New York, who came to Tacoma in 1889 and one year later moved to Skagit county. he is now making his home with Mr. and Mrs. Slosson. Mrs. Slosson's mother, Sarah (Cable) Touslee, a native of Iowa, is living in Chicago, where she is in the millinery and dressmaking business. Mrs. Slosson was born in Iowa in 1877 and received her education at St. Paul, Minnesota. She was married when eighteen years of age. Mr. and Mrs. Slosson have an adopted daughter, Gladys, a native of Skagit county. In politics Mr. Slosson is a republican. His farm is all in a high state of cultivation and includes five acres of fine Orchard. Mr. Slosson is a lover of cattle and has seventy head on his place. He is contemplating raising cattle on a larger scale. His home is modern in every way, with ample buildings and every convenience, showing taste and enterprise. Few men of Mr. Slosson's age, starting under similar circumstances, can give better evidence of their success from a material standpoint than is displayed on his well kept place, and his value as a neighbor and citizen is as fully evidenced by the respect and esteem in which he is held by his fellow-citizens.
Fred married Ethel Blanche TOUSLEE on 17 Apr 1896 in Dimas, Washington. Ethel was born in Oct 1877 in Charles City, Iowa. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
