He accompanied the Prince of Wales to Gascony in September 1355. He was summoned to Parliament from 15 Dec 1357 by writs directed 'Edwardo le Despenser', whereby he is held to have become Lord Le Despenser. He was with the King in the invasion of France, October 1359 to 1360. "Edward le Despenser, lord of Glowmorg" died testate aged thirty-nine at Llanbethian, co. Glamorgan, on 11 Nov 1375.

He was committed to the tower on 11 July 1403. the right to bear the undifferenced Arms of Hastings was decided against him in the Court of Chivalry on 9 May 1410, and in favour of his opponent Reynold, Lord Grey of Ruthin, heir to the sister of the whole blood, in preference to his own claim as heir to the brother of the half-blood, of John, Lord Hastinges, ancestor of the Earls of Pembroke. On refusing to pay the costs of his suit of appeal (lest he should thereby acknowledge its Justice), he was imprisoned (about 1417) in the Marshalsea apparently till his death.

About 1413, assisted by his brothers, Thomas and Edward, he carried on a private war with the Erdeswikes of Sandon, near Chartley, receiving a pardon on 24 Jan. 1414/5. he accompanied the King to France in August 1415, and was at the siege of Harfleur, and at the Battle of Agincourt on 25 Oct 1415.
