Notes:
Excerpt from Genealogical REcords: Pilgrim Genealogies and Histories, 1600s-1900s "Mayflower Planters Cape Code Series Vol. II": He came to New England with his father in 1635, when about 8 years old. He was prominent in the affairs of Eastham, being one of the planters of the town, and a deacon in the church for many years. He was a major of militia and saw service in the Indian wars, and was a member of the Bench of the Court of Common Pleas. His estate, consisting of land holdings, became extensive.
Name:
He was the youngest son of Edmund Freeman, the Sandwich settler, and was born in England. He came over with his father's family when a lad, in the ship Abigail, Captain Hackwell, in 1635. upon his marriage with Mercy, Gov. Prence's daughter by wife wife Patience Brewster, Feb. 13, 1649-50, he removed from Sandwich to that part of Nausett called Namskecket, now within the limits of Orleans and located, having paid his part of the purchase money. He was admitted a freeman in 1651, and the same year was one of the Grand jury from Eastham. In 1652, he was chosen to represent Eastham in the Old Colony court, and also elected in 1654, '56, '62, '63, '64, '65 and '66. He was chosen an assistant to the governor in 1666-7 in place of Mr. William Collier of Duxbury, and re-elected at every yearly election thereafter, until 1692. He was elected a selectman several years, but not as often as has been reported by some who have written concerning him. He was early connected with the militia. In 1665, he was the ensign of the company at Eastham, and in October, 1659, confirmed as lieutenant of the "troop of horse" by the colonial court. This was the only company of mounted soldiers in the Colon at this date. command was given to Capt. William Bradford of Plymouth....
He was one of the Council of War, and it seems, had seen some of the dangers of camp life during the war with King Philip. In a letter from Taunton, under date of June 8, 1675, to Gov. Josiah Winslow, to whom he was an assistant, he writes: "this morning three of our men are slain close by one of our court of guard; houses are burned in our sight; our men are picked off at every bush. The design of the enemy is not to face the army, but to fall on us as they have advantage." Tow of the men who fell as above mentioned were from Eastham, viz; Samuel Atkins and John Knowles....

5. | Elizabeth FREEMAN (1.Bennett1) was christened on 11 Apr 1624 in Parish of Billingshurst, co. Sussex, England; died after 24 June 1692. Notes:
Name:
Elizabeth (Freeman) Ellis was baptized in the parish of Billingshurst, co. Sussex, England, 11 April 1624, the fourth of the six children of Edmond and Bennet (Hodsoll) Freeman. She died probably in Rochester after 24 June 1692 - we suspect that the actual date of her death may have been not long before 20 April 1714, when her son William Ellis recorded a number of deeds bearing various dates, which suggests the probability that they were recorded in connection with the settlement of his mother's estate. She evidently died intestate, having already distributed her property among her children. There is no probate of her estate.
She must have possessed great strength of character as well as a good physical constitution. At the time of her husband's death she was fifty-three years old. Her three daughters and probably the eldest son Mordecai were then already married, as we believe. The five surviving unmarried sons ranged in age from about twelve to twenty. Perhaps all but the youngest were apprenticed and did not live at home. It may well be that she went to keep house for her father since her stepmother had died in the previous year. In any case, with the help of her eldest son, she promptly assumed responsibility for the administration of her late stepson's (?) estate.

41. | Samuel EDDY (20.Bennet3, 5.Elizabeth2, 1.Bennett1) was born in 1675 in Middleboro, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts ; died on 28 Apr 1751 in Middleboro, Massachusetts. Notes:
Name:
"He was a wheelwright and owned and occupied that part of his father's estate which included most of what is now known as Eddyville. His house stood by the great pear trees, long a landmark, and famous in all region for their size and fruit. It stood on a gentle knooll with a spring at its foot, the soil being fertile and easy of tilage, and well-watered.
"His home was burned to the ground about 1721, so he built another a little farther to the south of the site of the first. This is the one that is now standing in Eddyville, the oldest house existing in this line of ancestry and today it is in good preservation, cheerful and homelike." (Eddy Gen. 1881)
Melatiah was born in the fort where the inhabitants of Plymouth had taken refuge in the first year of King Philip's War. When she was an elderly woman she used to tell about the "times when the Indians were ten to one of the whites." Her parents died when she was young and she was brought up in the family of Ebenezer Tinkham, who was one of the deacons of the First Church when it was organized in 1694. Melatiah was admitted to the church on May 20, 1715. She was very religious. It is said of her that when her children were sick, she knelt down and prayed with them. She had a very frail constitution and always felt that her life would be short, but she outlived her husband, who was far more robust.
By a codicil added to his father's will on Dec. 17, 1722, Samuel was made executor. He appears on the town records when he and his brother Benjamin with others on Mar. 30, 1717 purchased of James Soule "two acres of land in the 26 Men's Purchase to be used for a Parish Burying Ground." This land is opposite the First Church and contains the graves of many of this branch of the family. Samuel was admitted to the First Church June 12, 1715. In the years between 1744 and 1748 there was a great dissension in the church at Middleboro between the "New Lights" and the "Old Lights". Samuel was one of those chosen to serve on a committee to devise some means to settle the differences.
In march 1734, Benjamin White, Samuel Eddy and Joseph Pumpus and two others petitioned the court for their "free consent to build a slitting mill on the Nemasket River on land of Moses Sturtewant." this permission was granted, but the dam was not built until later. They left "a sufficient opening for the passing of the herring up to the great ponds."
The earliest record of the First Military Co. of Middleboro, taken Jan. 19, 1710/11 has on its list, Serg Samuel eddy, and also the name of Benjamin Eddy. (Hist of Plymouth Col.)
"He was a man of uncommon strength and robust constitution, his frame being very large. Tradition has preserved remarkable proofs of his powers." (Eddy Gen. p. 208)
