    Article from The Nunda Herald, Nunda, McHenry Co., Ill dtd Friday, March 2, 1894:

    Died, at his home, Friday evening March 23, Gr. Geo. w. Dike, aged 82 years, 10 mos. and 14 days.

    George W. Dyke was born in the county of Pottsford, Vt., April 19, 181l. Leaving there in '41, he moved to this vicinity where he has resided ever since. He was converted when about 20 years old, when he joined the Cong'l church at this place, being one of the charter members, and the last of the charter members to pass away. Later on he became acquainted with the Free Methodists, and thought best to join them, and has since then been a faithful member. He was noted for his Christian integrity. He was truly a man of God.

    The funeral sermom was preached in the F.M. church, by Rev. M.V. Clute, of St. Charles, Ill., to a large concourse of sympathising friends. He leave a wife and several in family on the shores of time. The remains were laid to rest in the Crystal Lake cemetery.

    Excerpt from "History and Genealogies of the Hammond Families in America Vol. 2":

    He was engaged with his uncles, Charles F. and John C. Hammond, in the mining and lumber business in Crown Point, N. Y., until 1857, when he sold his interests there and removed to Fairbault, Minn., where he engaged in banking, milling and real estate business, in which he has been very successful. In 1858, he was appointed Colonel of the 8th Regiment, State Militia, and in 1861 he raised a company for the 1st Minnesota Regiment and entered the service as its Captain, but was soon promoted to Major in the Regiment. After six months of active service he was obliged to resign and return home to attend to his business, but still took an active interest in the cause. In 1865, he was appointed Paymaster General of the State Militi
