He assisted King Edward III in the seizure of the Earl of March in 1330, and from that time was one of the King's most active councillors. He was created EARL OF NORTHAMPTON on 16 Mar 1336/7. On 24 June 1340 he took a leading part in the King's victory at Sluys, and was with him at the siege of Tournay. He fought at Crecy on 26 Aug 1346, and participated in the siege of Calais. In later years he frequently had licenses to export wool, both as a means of recouping his expenses and on the King's behalf.

James Butler or Le Botiller, 2nd Earl of Ormond, was born at Kilkenny on 4 Oct 1331. He resided chiefly in Ireland, distinguishing himself in the wars there, and receiving many grants for his good services. He was several times Chief Governor of Ireland.
