TUTTLE FAMILY IS AMONG THE EARLY COMERS TO COUNTY

Mr. and Mrs. John Tuttle Sr. Came to Wausau When It was a Logging Camp

    MARRIED HERE IN 1853

Mrs. Tuttle Was First Shool Teacher Employed in School in Village

The following infrmation is furnished by George A. tuttle relative to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John tuttle Sr., pioneer settlers in Marathon County.
The Homecoming has brought many persons to Wausau who are discussing topics with home friends concerning pioneers and dates of their arrival in this commnity, and in order that historical records that may be compiled in the future be as nearly accurate as it is possible to make them, I desire to submit some data regarding my parents.
First let me mention some facts about father, John Tuttle Sr. he was born in Warren county, Pennsylvania July 22, 1829. In 1850 he left Pennsylvania and came to Wausau when it was little more than a logging camp and the population principally Indians. He lived here continuously up to the time of his death which occurred February 21, 1900. He was interested in the lumber industry and was one of the founders of the Parcher, J. and A. Stewart company saw mill that was located on the west bank of the Wisconsin river in the northern part of Wausau, known as "Parcherville." When the company was first organized, the firm name was Stewart, Tuttle & Parcher.
The late E.B. Thayer Sr. compiled the following information about my mother, and, as she was the first public school teacher in Wausau, that information should prove interesting along, with other statements of Mr. Thayer's who said that "Mrs. Mary S. Tuttle was born in Chazy, Clinton county, New York, August 16, 1830. Herman Slosson, father of Mrs. tuttle was a school teacher until forty-five years of age. he died at Fairwater, Wis. Mrs. Tuttle's mother was born in 1801 in New York state and died there in 1884.
"Mrs. Tuttle came west to visit in Chicago in 1853. She had a brother living in Wausau, Lorenzo W. Slosson, who went to Chicago and induced her to make the trip to Wausau. At that time no trains were running farther north than Belvidere, Ill. From that place to Stevens Point the trip had to be made by stage which took one week. They arrived in Stevens Point just too late to take the stage to Wausau which only made one trip weekly. They started out to make Knowlton by canoe and had only been out two hours when it commenced to rain and the canoe took leak and they had a hard time keeping afloat until they reached the Wylie hotel. They remained there one week, waiting for the stage which on that particular trip was driven by Charles A. Single, who was conducting the Forest House in Wausau.
"The trip was made to Wausau over a road that was very rough; the horses had to walk all the way, and it took from early in the morning until late in the evening to reach Wausau. Mrs. Tuttle remained at the house of her brother, A.L. Slosson, and taught the first public school here in 1852, commencing in July and continuing until February 1853. the school building stood near the hill on Fourth St. leading to the old Northwestern depot. She had eight scholars enrolled which were all the children here at the time. the wages paid at that time were four dollars a week. Miss Kate Fellow of Chazy, New York was a teacher in a select school just before Mrs. Tuttle arrived."
Mother met father in Wausau, then Big bull Falls, and the were married here in 1853. She died in Minneapolis at the home of her son, W.E. Tuttle, December 26, 1913.
