John De Welles, Knt., 5th Lord Welles, of Gainsby, son of John de Welles, 3rd Lord Welles, by Maud, daughter, probably, of William de Ros, 2nd Lord Ros of Helmesley. He was born at Conisholme, co. Lincoln, on 20 Apr 1352. He was summoned to Parliament from 20 Jan 1375-6 by writs directed "Johanni de Welle". He was frequently abroard or serving in the French wars. In May 1390 he and Sir David Lindsay, aftrwards 1st Earl of Crawford, performed a notable feat of arms on London Bridge to prove "the chivalry and valiant deeds of Englishmen", in which Welles was unhorsed at the third course. Alianor may have been living in 1399.
John married Eleanor DE MOWBRAY in May 1368. Eleanor (daughter of John DE MOWBRAY, III and Elizabeth DE SEGRAVE) was born before 25 Mar 1364; died after 1399. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
