- He lived with his uncle Josiah in Salem until his father passed was when Samuel was sixteen years old. His responsibilities for the care of his younger siblings interrupted his educational plans. He became an importer of merchandise, was prominent in military affairs and was a wealthy man in his day It is reported "that the 'Worshipful' Samuel Wolcott built and occupied the mansion which afterwards became famous as the Washington Headquarters in Wethersfield."
