- Prior to their double wedding, Maria and her twin sister, Mary, taught school in the Ganville Vicinity. Lemuel came to Pittsfield at age 15 and, after a six-year apprenticeship with a maternal uncle, became a highly skilled cabinetmaker. He later established a furniture business and was also Pittsfield's leading undertaker. A "friend of the poor," he was "highly prosperous" and of "unquestioned integrity." [1]
