Name |
James PACKER [1, 2] |
- Both are buried in the Packer Cemetery at Guilford, Vt.
In 1778, Deacon James Packer, his wife Rebecca, and their family left Groton, Conn., for their new home in Guilford, Vt., where James became a leading man. He was elected "Committeeman of the Convention, " being one of those who took the side of the State of New York in the controversy concerning the government and control of the "New Hampshire Grants" (As Vermont was then known) In 1783, he was overseer of the highways. Also, he was elected Deacon of the Baptist Society.
Rebecca and Deacon James are the progenitors of a sturdy numerous line called the "Vermont Packers", to distinguish them from other migrating sons and daughters.
Rebecca's mother died when she was two years old and she was reared by relatives, after her father remarried. [1]
