  • Name Joseph HOWLAND  [1, 2
    • Joseph's estate consisted of L500, including land at Little Compton, R.I., and Duxbury, and a negro servant. He joined the Friends, and in consequence of his firmness and courage was among the persecuted of that sect. It is recorded that in 1679 the constable came to collect the tax imposed upon him toward building the colonial meeting-house, and refusing to pay, the officer seized "a yearling stear and 4 pounds of wooll." In the same year the constable called for L2 2s. for the same purpose, and failing to get it, took a beast appraised at L2 2s. 9d. In 1681 he took seven sheep for rate for the priest, Ichabod Wiswell. More seizures were made in 1683 and 1685. He probably lived on the Duxbury estate, and cared for his father and mother in their last days. [1]
