Notes |
- Excerpt from "History and Genealogies of the Hammond Families in America Vol. 2": They settled on the homestead with his father for whom he kindly cared during his declining years. Col. Hammond suffered a shock of paralysis some years before his death which impaired his physical ability but not his mind and his son gave him every attention that a kind and dutiful mind could suggest.
Augustus Hammond was a man of plain and simple habits, unpretending in his manner but highly respected for the excellence of his character. A kind neighbor, a sincere friend and an earnest Christian but too modest and diffident, greatly undervaluing his own merits and ability.
