In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider St. James Lutheran Church, Cannonball Gardens at East Park; where Jim's father, Patrick, was killed two and half miles North of there on April of 1932, when Jim was two and half years old.
James Dominick O'Donnell was born Feb 7, 1929 in Mason City, the son of Patrick J. and Sadie A. (Smith) O'Donnell. He attended Mason City High School, enlisting into the Navy in 1947. He received a medical discharge after seven months due to his knee problems. He was then drafted into the Army on December 6, 1950 and was honorably discharged on November 22, 1952. Jim was united in marriage to Ruth Arlene Hagen on October 16, 1953 at St. James Lutheran Church. To this union two children were born, Kirk Patrick O'Donnell and Susan Diane O'Donnell.
Jim worked for over forty years delivering freight around North Iowa and acquiring extended friends adding to the many family, neighbors and relatives. Jim was known to help anyone, fix or repair things even though he might not have the proper tools and sometimes making them better - in return they were thankful for him.
Jim loved gardening, travelling to visit children in Oelwein, Alaska and Washington. Jim was a volunteer for the Boy Scouts in the 1970's at St. James and served over twenty-five years on the VFW and on the Veterans Honor Guard post 733 and assisted with over seven hundred veteran funerals. Later he volunteered with his wife, Ruth, at the Mercy Hospital Gift Shop.
Jim is survived by his wife, Ruth of sixty-five years; two children, Kirk P. O'Donnell of Bainbridge Island, Washington and Susan D (Jeff) Heitland of Oelwein, Iowa; two grandchildren, Matthew (Jennifer) Heitland and Jennifer (David) McCready.
Preceding him in death are his parents; eight siblings, Patricia (Alfred) Bitter, Rosetta (Earl) Cornelius, Joseph P. O'Donnell, infant brother James, Ruth (Harold) Huffacker, William A. O'Donnell, Margaret (William) McCloskey, John P. (Sarah) O'Donnell; brother in-law, Walter (Vivian) Hagen and Alvin (Monica) Hagen, numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great-great nieces and great-great nephews. His special Black Cat, Fritzie, that lived to be seventeen.
In the last few years as health declined and unable to go for walks, he and Ruth would sit by the garage while their neighbors and friends would stop to talk with them. Along with their friends, the neighborhood cats and dogs would stop by for their daily treats from Jim and Ruth.
A special thank you to the family, friends, neighbors and medical staff. [1]
