Nathan HAZEN [1] |
- During the Revolution, Nathan Hazen served six months in the Connecticut Militia; enlisted 8 May, discharged 16 Dec 1775, in the 3rd Co., Capt. John Durkee, 3rd Regt., Col. Israel Putnam. His name is also on a "Pay roll of Capt. William Hutchins' Co., in Col. Herrick's Regt. of Militia in the service of the State of Vermont" for ten days commencing 11 Oct. 1780; also on a "Pay Roll of Capt. Isaac Tichenor's Co., col. Ebenezer Walbridge's regt. of Militia" in service at Castleton, fourteen days from 13 Oct 1781.
He was one of the pioneers in North Hero, settling near the south end of the island as early as 1784; "Nathan Hazen of the Two Heroes, County of Rutland, Sate of Vermont" bought two rights of land of Ephraim Carr of Bennington 10 Nov. 1784, and 27 Nov., one right in the Two Heroes from Ebenezer Walbridge of Bennington. (South Hero Deeds.) he was moderator of the first town meeting in North Hero 17 Mar 1789, selectman, 1789-90, and 1797-98, town treasurer, 1809, and justice of the peace. In 1790 the town voted to pay Nathan Hazen and John Knight $2.00 for a half acre of land for a burying-ground; this was the South End Cemetery where he and his wife and three children were buried. Nathan Hazen sold land in North Hero to David Hazen, 1 Mar. 1810 (consideration $1,000), and to Charles Hazen, 1 May 1812 (consideration 4400). Charles Hazen conveyed his plot to Elizabeth, Lois, and Cynthia Hazen for the same consideration, 1 May 1813. (North Hero Deeds, 3:23, 108, 143.) [1]
