Martha F. HULETT [2] |
- Daughter of John M. Hulett born Vermont and Lucinda Jay born NY, Martha F. Hulett married Thomas W. Parry in 1861. By 1880, Mattie Parry was separated from her husband and a Lecturer in Rock, Beloit, WI. Head of the Parry household, her children were Willie, Johnnie, Mattie, Edward, and Lulu. The children were born in MI with the exception of Lulu born WI. On 4 Nov 1880, Cook County, IL, she married widower Judge Arnold Krekel.
Judge Krekel's obituary of 18 July 1888 reported that Mrs. Krekel and his children were with him in his last hours: He passed away without much suffering, and seemed to be going to sleep. His wife and daughters were grief stricken. All of his relatives were summoned by telegraph.
In accordance with Judge Krekel's wishes, his funeral was conducted at the family residence without ostentation and he was to be buried in St. Charles where other members of his family were interred.
Martha H. Krekel/Kreckel survived her husband by more than 30 years and died at the age of 81 years and 5 months; informant on her MO Death Certificate was her daughter, Miss Lulu Parry (MO #26181).

A Free Thinker in her own right, Mrs. Krekel was a vice-president of the American Secular Union and she is acknowledged in The Works of Robert G. Ingersoll, Vol. 12 (of 12): http://www.gutenberg.org/files/38812/38812-h/38812-h.htm
CONVENTION OF THE AMERICAN SECULAR UNION.
Albany, N. Y., September 13, 1885.
In this particular, leaving out myself as I have said, you have done magnificently well. Mrs. Mattie Krekel, another vice-president, is a woman who has the courage to express her opinions, and she is all the more to be commended because, as you know, women have to suffer a little more punishment than men, being amenable to social laws that are more exacting and tyrannical than those passed by Legislatures.

Krekel, Arnold (1815?1888) Krekel was an American judge who had been born in Prussia but went with his parents in 1832 to America, settling in Missouri. He was elected in 1852 to the Missouri State Legislature, served as a colonel during the Civil War, was president of the Constitutional Convention of 1865, and signed the ordinance of emancipation by which the slaves of Missouri were set free. A pronounced agnostic, he was described in Putnam's Four Hundred Years of Freethought. Krekel when he realized he was about to die requested his wife not to wear mourning, saying that death was as natural as birth. His wife, Mattie Parry Krekel (Born 1840), was also a freethinker. In a Truth Seeker (15 February 1890) article, she wrote, "Freethought means, first of all, mental self-assertion."
