Name |
Samuel DYRE [1] |
- He was a milliner from London who was admitted to the First Church, Boston on 3 Mar 1635/6. He was disarmed the next year as a supporter of Wheelwright, but in 1638 he was disfranchised driven to Rhode Island. At Newport he was in good esteem as Secretary of that Colony. He prevailed with the government in 1659 to spare his wife's life after she had come to Boston to preach Quarkerism and was condemned to die. However, her insane desire for martyrdom led her back to Boston in 1660 to scaffold, serving to show how useless the unnatural lenity of Gov. Endicott, "who knew well what the honor of God demanded."
