William G. Gay, Sr., lovingly known as ?Bill? and ?Grumpy?, age 80, of Channahon, passed away peacefully, December 22, 2022 at 6:17 p.m., at Lightways Hospice, with his loving daughter by his side.

Born July 8, 1942 in Joliet, he was the son of the late William and Anna (Long) Gay.

Bill grew up in Channahon and Joliet graduating from Joliet Central Class of 1960. After high school, he joined the Army to serve his Country. He worked at the Joliet Arsenal before settling in at Stepan Chemical where he retired from in 2005. He had many friendships there and really had some stories! He also tended bar at Stone City VFW where once again- he knew everyone! Once he retired, he then worked part time at Midwest valve in Minooka, where he enjoyed hanging out in the shop talking to all the guys- even when he was not working.

He certainly had the gift to gab, however his greatest thing to brag about were his five grandchildren. He was so proud of them and was not afraid to tell you. They each had their special moments with their ?Paw?, and he did not miss much of whatever they were involved in. He also loved going on ?casino roadtrips? with his brother, Bob.

Bill was someone who you always knew where you stood with him, and that pointer finger would come out to make sure you got it. He was a fighter and as a family we learned he was not a quitter over the last year which was something we were so proud of.

Surviving are his daughter, Georgette (Craig Siegel) Salazar of Minooka; five grandchildren, Olivia (Freddie Ramos) Salazar of Mount Prospect, Maximus Salazar of Minooka, Nikolas (Sarah Kelly) Holland of Reddick, William DeLucio of Reddick, and Logan DeLucio of Reddick; daughter in law, Trichelle (Russell) Mattas of Reddick; one sister, Harriet (the late Ed) Wicburg of Oceanside, CA; one brother, Robert A. (Colleen) Gray of Channahon; and several nieces and nephews.

Bill also had some wonderful friends who he considered family: Mary, Heather, Tammy, Jerry (aka ?the newspaper?), Kevin, Rick and Virginia (aka Fred and Ethel) and his favorite granddog, Mavis. He always had special names for those closest to him, and that will be dearly missed.

He was preceded in death by his son, William ?Billy? Delucio (2008); his parents; a sister, Judith Parks; and his best friend, Bernie.

Family would like to extend a big Thank you to Dr. Suh and Lightways Hospice for their wonderful care and kindness. It is truly amazing what kindness can do for the soul!!

Visitation for Bill Gay will be held Friday, December 30, 2022 from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m., at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Road (at Essington Road) Joliet. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 31, 2022 at 10:00 a.m., at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Willard Grove Cemetery, Channahon.

8746 Oct. 14, 1924 - Oct. 14, 2014

On Oct. 14, her 90th birthday, Donna Mae Scarlett passed away peacefully at her home in Woodland. She was born in Rio Linda, Calif., in 1924 to Roy and Eva Storey Jones. Her family moved to Woodland when she was three years old and she attended local schools starting at Dingle Elementary and graduating from Woodland High School in 1942.

After working at the local draft board during World War II, she married the love of her life, William Scarlett. They lived for a time in Berkeley where Bill earned his business degree at UC Berkeley, while Donna supported him working at the Oakland Tribune. Upon his graduation, they made their first home in Woodland.

While her sons were growing up, she was a Cub Scout Leader, Gibson School PTA member, homemaker and the one responsible for shuttling kids around to athletic events in her Ford station wagon. She always had a strong sense of community as one of the original members of the Woodland Memorial Auxiliary (Pink Ladies), volunteering as an advisor to Sub Debs, a member of Omega Nu and serving the elderly in the Meals on Wheels Program until she was in her 80's.

She was a classic beauty with striking white hair and impeccable style. Throughout her whole life, Donna was all about her family, friends and living life to the fullest. She was an extraordinary manager of her home, excellent cook and world class traveler. She loved summers in Carmel, golfing with the ladies at the Yolo Fliers Club, entertaining dear friends, and holidays with family.

JONES, Donna Mae (I77866)

8747 October 21, 1753, he joined the West Woodstock Congregational Church, but before 1758 had moved to Wales, a district of Springfield, Mass., and later a part of the town of Wilbraham. In the latter year he served as a Private in the Colonial War, in Colonel William William's regiment, Captain Jonathan Ball's company, raised by the province of Massachusetts Bay for the reduction of Canada. He is spoken of as "of Springfield," served from April 13, to November 4, and travelled seven days. ( Massachusetts Archives, Muster Rolls, Vol. XCVI, P 444.)

In a list of pew holders in the Wilbraham Congregational Church, dated July 3, 1770, we find that Isaiah Chaffee and his wife, with four other men and their wives occupied pew number five. The land records show that on August 18,1761, "Isaiah Chafee husbandman of Wales" sold to David Burt, 2d, of Springfield, husbandman, for L90, one hundred and eight acres of land in Wales, formerly belonging to Isaiah's "Honored father, Joseph Chaffee, deceased." This deed is signed by "Isaiah Chafee" and Betty Chafee." April 10,1767, "Isaiah Chaffee, husbandman, of Wilbraham" bought land of Henry Badger of that place for L18. April 2, 1771, in Northampton, Mass., Comfort Chaffee, brother of Isaiah, was appointed administrator of this estate, and at the same time William King was appointed guardian of the five minor children, Betty, over fourteen, William, Joseph, Isaiah and Hannah under fourteen. Isaiah left almost nothing and September 14, 1772, Comfort Chaffee obtained the consent of the court to sell the whole of the estate, the papers being signed by Comfort and the widow, Betty Chaffee. This was probably for the purpose of paying Isaiah's debts and obtaining ready money for the needs of the widow and children. From this time the family suffered many hardships from extreme poverty; probably no line of the Chaffee family had a harder life than did the children of Isaiah after his death.

Isaiah and his bother Ephraim are said to have helped drive the wolf of Israel Putnam fame into the cave where it was captured. It had wrought sad havoc among the sheep in the neighborhood of Pomfret.
CHAFFE, Isaiah (I73617)

8748 October 28, 1694, just before John Chaffe's twenty-first birthday, his father died and he, together with his mother and younger brother, was made an executor of the estate. According to the terms of his father's will he received a "heifor," one-half of his father's "tooles" and gun, and, on attaining the age of twenty-one, one-fourth part of his "Upland and Meadow ground in Swanzey." He and his mother drew lot number one hundred and twenty in a division of land in Rehoboth, June 16, 1697. (Rehoboth Records.).....  CHAFFE, John (I73620)

8749 Of his early history nothing more is known than is contained in the following extract from the History of the Baptists in America, compiled by the Reverend Isaac Backus. "Sampson Mason was a soldier in the Cromwell's army and he came to America upon the turn of the times in England and settled in Rehoboth and his posterity are now as numerous as, perhaps those of any man who came to our country in his day" (Vol. 2, page 435). Backus probably gained his information from grandsons of Sampson Mason who were pastors of the Second Church of Swansea at the tie the history was written, and possibly his wife, who was a great-granddaughter of Sampson Mason, may have related to him some of the family traditions. However this may be, the authenticity of the statement can scarcely be doubted. MASON, Sampson (I38099)
