  1. 8.  Bray/Bryan ROSSITER was born in Poss. 1610 in England; died on 30 Sep 1672 in Guilford, Connecticut.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Fact: Son of Edward of Boston, Mass.
    • Fact: 18 May 1631, Made a Freeman

    Notes:

    Name:
Son of EDWARD ROSSITER and his wife ? Comb. Edward, a stockholder in the Dorchester company, died at Dorchester in October 1631. Bray's brothers, Nicholas (and his family) and Hugh, returned to England; sisters Jane and Joan remained in New England and married respectively, Thomas Gilbert and Nicholas Hart.

MILITARY: In April 1640 the Connecticut records show that "Mr Rocester of Wyndsor" was made ensign for the "several bands in the said Townes."

COURT: Bray Rochester served on the jury at the Connecticut court in July 1640 and was frequently a party in court. In 1643 he sued the widow Hutchinson for L2w40. In 1650 he sued Henry Wolcott over a debt for treatment of his son. He lost a suit for defamation against Nicholas Hoit and withdrew one for slander against Peter Tilton that same year. In September 1652 he was in the Guilford Plantation Court stating that he had agreed to arbitration regarding his suit against Edward Sewers for false imprisonment.

OCCUPATION: Physician, surveyor, agitator. He was admitted to the practice of medicine at Windsor after "being first tried and approved by Mr. Hooker, Mr. Stone and old Mr. Smith of Wethersfield." At the time of his removal to Guilford in 1651, he is said by historians to have been the only physician in Connecticut colony, but John Winthrop, Jr., was probably already practicing there, too. In March 1662/3 Rossiter performed the first autopsy known in Connecticut on the body of an eight-year-old girl, Elizabeth Kelly, who hd died in a delirium after accusing a neighbor, Goody Ayres of bewitching her. By the time Rossiter got there, the girl had been dead for five days. he was asked to determine whether she died of natural or preternatural causes. Because he had expected the body to be stiff and it was limber, he reported it as a preternatural sign. Seventeenth century medical knowledge of 'rigor mortis' was limited by today's standeards, and Rossiter was evidently unaware that stiffness abates in about 36 hours. The court allowed Dr. Rosseter "Twenty pounds, in reference to opening Kellies child, and his paynes to visit the Dep: Govern', and his paynes in visiting and administering to Mr. Talcot."

Bray/Bryan married Elizabeth ALSOP before 1639. Elizabeth was christened on 15 Feb 1613/14 in Crewkerne, Somerset, England; died on 29 Aug 1669 in Guilford, Connecticut. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

It is not known when or how Elizabeth came to New England, although there were a number of families from Crewkerne who came in 1630, and it has been suggested she might have been one of the servants in Edward Rossiter's party.

    Notes:

    Name:
I originally had Deacon George Bartlett as the son of Robert Bartlett and Mary Warren. It was done many years ago when my genealogy skills were just beginning to develop. At that time, I relied on other's family trees. I have since learned to find vital resources. Sorry for the misleading of this family.

Excerpt from American Ancestors: New England Historical and Genealogical Register

Deacon George Bartlett is said to have been a brother of John Bartlett who lived in Windsor. he was a Guilford Soon after the settlement of the plantation. His name appears as a witness in the first Court record, Aug. 14, 645, and it would seem as if he had been there then a considerable time. At a Court, Oct. 9, 1645, he was appointed, with three others, "to make and finish ye pound within ye time of 3 weeks under ye fine of 20 shillings." He seems to have been a man of education and consequence in the community, and was frequently a witness in the Courts.

At a General Court, on May 22, 1648, "Mr." Bartlett was given the "Freeman's Charge." In the Book of "Terriers," his name is tenth, with a homelot containing four and a half acres, allowed for four, at the South-west corner of the Green. he was chosen overseer of highways on May 22, 1649, and on June 9, 1653, one of the townsmen. He succeeded Gov. William Leete as Secretary of the Plantation, on June 5, 1662, and at the same time became one of the Deputies to hold the Particular Courts. he was chosen on April 23, 1665, with John Fowler, as one of the first representatives sent by Guilford to the General Assembly of Connecticut, by which colony the New Haven jurisdiction had just been absorbed. On July 6, 1665, he was appointed Lieutenant of the Train Band at Guilford. Prior to that date, but after 1660, he and John Fowler were made the first deacons of the Guilford Church.

On June 23, 1654, New Haven Jurisdiction raised a company numbering 133, commanded by Capt. Seeley, to cooperate with an army of 800 from all the United Colonies of New England, and George Bartlett was appointed to command the Guilford contingent of 17, with the rank of sergeant. On June 9, 1651, he was elected Marshal of the Plantation, succeeding Thomas Jones. In 1665 he was appointed, with Robert Kitchel, as "commissioner" for Guilford, and "invested with magestratical power." In 1649, he and John Hoadly, were appointed by the town of Guilford to build a cart bridge over East River, receiving L3 in English commodities, the rest in "country pay or works." A year previously he had been one of three men appointed to build a fence to keep the young cattle from the "herd's walk". Deacon Bartlett was married, by Mr. Samuel Desborough, to Mary, daughter of Abraham Cruttenden on Sept. 14, 1650. He died Aug. 2, 1669, and was buried the next day. His wife did not long survive, but died on Sept. 10, 1669.
