Name:
John Steward Slosson, a resident of The Pines at Davidson, died Saturday, July 11, 2009. He was 97. A memorial service is planned Saturday (details below).
Mr. Slosson was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Emily Virginia Slosson, and his daughter, Rebecca Slosson Hardy. He later married Doris Heerwagen Slosson and they remained married until her death in 2003.
Mr. Slosson was born June 6, 1912, in New York City. He graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1933, and began a long career with J.H. Williams/United Greenfield, progressing from a trainee on the shop floor to Group Vice-President of United Greenfield. He retired in 1974 after 41 years.
Jack enjoyed golfing, sailing, and horseback riding. In later years, he traveled the world with his wife, Doris. He was raised in Vermont, spent his working career in Buffalo and Chicago, and retired to Hilton Head and Vermont. In 2003, Jack moved to Davidson where he enjoyed frequent visits from his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
He is survived by his children Alexandra Jordan of Dunedin, Florida and Peter Slosson and wife, Becky, of Davidson. Jack had six grandchildren, Christopher Hardy and wife, Dianne, of Hilton Head, South Carolina, Eric Hardy of Hilton Head, Heather Slosson Roberts and husband, Josh, of Davidson, Jack Slosson and wife, Jennifer, of Davidson, Nicholas Jordan and wife, Alison, of Ventura, California, and Adrian Jordan and wife, Alia, of Centennial, Colorado. He also had eight great-grandchildren, Emmy, Ben and Kate Roberts and Libby Slosson of Davidson, Tariq Jordan, Matthew Hardy, and Riley and Lex Jordan.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. in Lingle Chapel of Davidson College Presbyterian Church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of Lake Norman.
