    Name:
"Hyde Genealogy": What renders it almost certain that three of the seven daughters of Hester Hyde and John Post must have died previously to 18 of Jan., 1686, and probably unmarried, is that by deed of that date, upon the Windham records, it appears that William Hyde willed to the daughters of his only daughter, Hester Post, certain lands in Windham. That a controversy arose between the eldest son of her brother and the devisees, in relation to the validity of this will; and that a compromise took place between him and the three sons-in-law of Hester Hyde and John Post; Caleb Abel, John Hough, and Nathaniel Rudd. And by their deed the latter three conveyed, to the said oldest son of Samuel Hyde the first, one-half of the lands in dispute, in compromise of his claim. And no mention is made of any other granddaughters of the testator, as being in existence, to make any claim to the lands under the will devising the same to the daughters of the testator's daughter, Hester Post.

    Notes:

Stephen came from Othem, Kent, England, to Newtowne (Cambridge), Massachusetts about 1634 and then joined the group under REV. THOMAS HOOKER which settled Hartford, Connecticut. He moved from Hartford to the Oyster River Quarter of Saybrook about 1649, where he died.

Excerpt from NEGH Register: Stephen and Elinor had just one child baptized at Hollingbourne, and the Post family appears to have left Hollingbourne altogether by the mid-seventeenth century, given that the burial of Stephen's father in 1639 is the last entry for the surname in the register. Stephen apparently moved to Otham by 1629 when his second child was baptized there. "Stephen Post of Otham, carpenter" was bondsman on 1 Mr 1632 for the marriage intentions of his sister Mary Post with Allen Wenn. Stephen signed the Otham parish register as churchwarden in 1632, and was mentioned in that register for the last time on 3 Sep 1633 when his son Joseph was buried. Stephen Post and his family immigrated to new England between that date and 1 Sep 1634 when he was first mentioned in the records of Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1636 he ws one of the first proprietors of Hartford, Connecticut. About 1649 he moved to sAybrook, Connecticut, where he lived until his death a decade later.

Stephen married Eleanor PANTON on 17 Oct 1625 in Langley, Kent, England. Eleanor was born in 1604/5 in Otham, Kent, England; died on 13 Nov 1670 in Saybrook, Middlesex County, Connecticut. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Excerpt from New England Families: William was among the founders of Hartford, Connecticut, and his name is on the monument to the first settlers there. He was a man of considerable importance and wealth for his day, and was frequently selectman and held other places of trust.

"Hyde Genealogy": The name of William Hyde, first appears at hartford, Conn., in 1636. And his name is on the monument in the old cemetery at that place as one of the original settlers; and he had lands assigned to him there.

Many families of the name of Hyde had been settled in different parts of England for five or six hundred years prior to the settlement of New England. One of the names, Sir Nicholas Hyde, was chief justice of the court of King's Bench in 1626; another, Sir Robert Hyde, was chief justice of the court of common pleas in 1660. And a third, Sir Edward Hyde, afterwards the Earl of Clarendon, was lord chancellor at the restoration, 1660; and was the grandfather of Queen Mary the 2d, and Queen Ann, and of Edward hyde, Lord Cornbury, who was one of the provincial governors of New York.

William Hyde the first of Norwich, was a contemporary of Sir Robert Hyde and of the Earl of Clarendon; but was undoubtedly of humbler origin. I have not been able to ascertain from what part of England he came; to what family he belonged; or where he first landed in this country, or the precise time when he arrived here. He probably, however, came over in 1633, with the Rev. Thomas Hooker, the first minister of hartford; sojourned a short time at Newton, Mass., and removed with him to Hartford, in 1636. The time of his removal to Saybrook, is not ascertained, but he owned lands in Hartford as late as 1639. He probably went to Saybrook soon after that, and his dau. was m. there early in 1652. No information has been obtained as to the name of his wife, or when or where she died. ....

    Notes:

    Name:
He came with his father to Scituate in 1634, thence to Barnstable, where he married and commenced life as a house builder. He afterwards became an extensive farmer. At Barnstable, his house stood next to that of John Scudder, who was probably a brother of his wife. (Miss Caulkins' Hist. of New London, edition of 1852, p. 57.) Feb. 25, 1647/8, he was chosen a townsman of New London and in the recorded vote, it is stated that the four so chosen served the previous year, so he must have been a townsman in 1647. This would indicate that he was in New London as early as 1646. New London was then called Pequot. He is mentioned in two letters from Gov. Winthrop to his son John at Pequot. In one of them dated Aug. 14 1648, he says "Your neighbor "Lothrop" came not at me," (as I expected), to advise about it," (the selecting of a minister)." HIs house at New London was the third in order from that of John Winthrop, Jr., and was located northwest of it, and his name is one of the first eighteen to whom lands were assigned on the east side of "the great river' (Meaning the Thames). Almost at once he was appointed to places of responsibility and honor. He was one of the three judges for a court of minor cases When in 1657, Uncas routed by the Narragansetts had taken refuge in the fort at the head of the Nahantick and was there besieged, Lieut. James Avery, Mr. Brewster, Samuel Lothrop and others, well armed succeeded in throwing themselves into the fort and aided in its defense. (See Lothrop Family, pp. 38-40.) Although he removed to Norwich about 1668, his farm "at Namucksuck on the west side of the Great River," remained in the family until 1735, when his grandson, nathaniel, sod it.
