Generation: 4

  1. 8.  George HULL was born in 1590 (son of Thomas HULL and Joane PESON); died in 1659.

    Notes:

    Name:
"The Hull Family in America": George Hull, 1590-1659, surveyor, Indian Trader, magistrate, statesman and founder of a prominent branch of the Hull family in America, the son of Thomas and Joane Peson Hull, of Crewkerne, Somersetshire, England. On August 17, 1614 as shown by the original parish records of the ancient church at Crewkerne village, he was married to Thamzen (Thomasene) Michell, daughter of Robert Michell, a well-do-do- yeoman of Stockland, in the adjoining shire of Dorset. Stockland is about six miles distant from the village of Crewkerne, at or near which the ancestral home of the Hulls was situated, and it was probably included within the bounds of Crewkerne parish. ......

William and Joseph Hull, the oldest and youngest of the brothers of George Hull, were graduates of St. Mary's Hall, Oxford, and ministers of the Church of England. William, who was vicar of Colyton in Devonshire, died childless in 1627, leaving a will in which he names his brothers George, John, and Joseph, also Marie (Mary), daughter of his brother George, and Johanna, daughter of his brother Joseph.

George Hull was about forty years of age when he left England, and so far as is known, land surveying was not only his profession but his principal avocation while he remained there.

On March 30th, 1629-30, he sailed fro Plymouth, England, with a noted company of adventurers which included Ludlow, Mason, Underhill, Southcote, maverick and Warham, all of whom became men of marked prominence in either the civil, military or ecclesiastical affairs of New England. The record of baptism of his son Joshua at Crewkerne, seven and a half months after his departure suggests the probability that he sailed unaccompanied by his family and at a late date after he had "spied out the land," he either returned for or was joined by them.

No record of place or date of death of Thomasene Michell Hull has been discovered, but that she died previous to 1655 is shown by the recorded fact that about that date George Hull was married to Sarah, widow of David Phipin, Esq., of Boston.

As previously stated George Hull came to New England in 1629-30. After spending a short time in Boston, he with other colonists settled the town of Dorchester, the records of which show that he was a prominent member of its first board of selectmen, and its representative in the first general court of Massachusetts Bay Colony held May 14, 1634.

In 1636 he moved to Windsor, Conn., of which and the adjoining town of Wethersfield, he made official surveys, receiving in compensation for his service, awards of choice town lots. The records of Windsor contain divers records showing that he was one of the "first comers" and prominent grantees of that town, which he was chosen to represent in the general court of Connecticut.....

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Fact: Son of John and Agnes Loomis of Thaxted, Essex, England

    Notes:

    Excerpt from "Dawes-Gates Ancestral Lines":
The parents of Joseph Loomis, of New England, were probably John and Agnes Loomis, of Braintree, co. Essex, England. If so, he was their only son and the executor of the father's will in May and June, 1619.......
They remained in England until the spring of 1638 when, on april 11, with their eight children, they embarked at Maldon (the nearest seaport to Braintree) on the "Susan and Ellen" on which their goods also came and arrived in Boston on July 17, following. It is theorized that they spent their first year in this country at Dorchester though proof of that opinion has not yet been found, but in the summer and fall of 1639 the family removed overland to Windsor, Connecticut, probably in the company with the Reverend Ephraim Huet who arried there August 17, 1639.......
Joseph served on a jury on March 2, 1642, and on another in company with NATHANIEL FOOTE in September 1644. On January 6, 1650, he was sued by William Buell for trespass and for damage to the extent of seven bushels of corn; one may infer that his stock got away from him...

    Name:
"The Hull Family in America": Joseph Loomis, the father-in-law of Lieut. Josiah Hull, before coming to New England, was a woolen draper of Brintree essex County, England, and was married in said county, June 30, 1614, to Mary White, daughter of Robert White and his wife Bridget Alger. He came to America in the ship "Susan and Ellen", leaving England April 1, 1638.....

He was a woolen draper in Braintree, co Essex, Engl., and came in the ship "Susan and ellen," leaving London, april 11, 1638 and arriving at Boston, July 17, 163, as is proved by the deposition of Joseph Hills of Charlestown. (N.E. Reg., 30, p. 459.) He brought with him his sons, Joseph, John, Thomas, Samuel and Nathaniel, and daughters, Mary, Elizabeth, and another who m. Nicholas Olmstead. He is supposed to have come to Windsor, Conn. in company with rev. Ephraim Huit, who arrived there Au. 17, 1639. Feb 2, 1640, he was granted twenty-one acres of land adjoining the Farmington river, and his house was on what was known as the "the Island" because at every freshet it became temporarily an island. Stiles says "This Ancestral Home" has been in perpetual possession of his descendants coming down in an unbroken regular succession to Epaphras Loomis, who sold it to Rev. George Loomis, who in turn sold it to John Mason Loomis. He served twice on the jury of the Particular Court, March 2, 1642/3 and September, 1644.

Joseph married Mary WHITE on 30 Jun 1614 in Messing, Essex, England. Mary (daughter of Robert WHITE and Bridget ALLGAR) was born in 1590 in Shalford, England; was christened on 24 Aug 1590; died on 23 Aug 1652 in Windsor, Hartford Co., Connecticut. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
