  1. 1.  Thomas WELLS, IV was born about 1678 in Deerfield, Franklin Co., Massachusetts (son of Lieut. Thomas WELLS, III and Hepzibah BUELL); died about 1750.

    Excerpt from "The Descendants of William Beardsley and Mary Harvey" by Ellwood Count Curtis:
    Captain Thomas was a gragoon in the Pomroy pursuit in 1698. In 1725 he led a large scouting party to the frontiers of Canada with Joseph Clesson for his Lieutenant. He was a prominent participant in the settlement of Fall Town.
    He was a trader. Among his public services he was a surveyor and a selectmand for twelve years. He left a lot of real estate to his nephew Captain Thomas Dickinson. He raised Susannah Wells, his niece, and also willed her a lot of land. He gae a silver tankard to the church. His estate ws probated on 3 April 1750.

    Thomas married Sarah BARNARD on 29 Mar 1700. Sarah (daughter of Joseph BARNARD and Sarah STRONG) was born on 30 Dec 1677. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  1. 2.  Lieut. Thomas WELLS, III was born on 10 Jan 1651/2 in Wethersfield, Hartford Co., Connecticut (son of Thomas WELLS, II and Mary BEARDSLEY); died on 02 Dec 1691 in Deerfield, Franklin, Massachusetts, USA.

    Notes:

    Hepzabah was the widow of Thomas Wells of Hatfield, whose 3 daughters had been knocked on the head by the Indians on June 6, 1693. One recovered. On February 29, 1704, Hepzabah with the widow daughter of William Buell, at the onslaught upon Deerfield, was taken by the Indians and carried a short distance on the way to Canada, when her strength failed, she was killed. On June 6, 1693, wid. Wells and two children were tomahawked by Indians and the family was broken up. Was taken prisoner when the town was sacked in 1704, and was killed on the march to Canada.

    On 30 September 1673 this poor woman was "presented" at the County Court for wearing silk, probably her wedding clothes. On 29 May 1676 she was fined 10 shillings for the same offense. She was very seriously injured by the savage Indians when they attacked Hatfield in 1673. She suffered for many years because of these wounds. On 29 February 1704 she was captured by Indians. She was forced to march toward Canada with them. When she was unable to move as fast as they ordered, she was brutally killed.
