("In 1659, Thomas Welles and his step-father, Thomas Coleman, were among the first settlers of Hadley, Mass.")

    Name:
    Sarah's father was an early settler of Hartford and Hadley, and became one of the largest landholders in the colony of Connecticut. Her mother was the only child of Elder William and Susannah Goodwin. Elder Goodwin was a fellow-passenger with Elder John White, in the ship Lyon, and was one of the leaders in the settlement of Hadley. Sarah Crow was born at Hartford, March 1, 1647, and was but 14 years and 8 months old at the time of her marriage. She was one of seven daughters, who marred into some of the best families in the valley of the Connecticut. A High authority in such matters has said, "those Crow girls made smart Women." Mrs. Sarah White died at Hatfield, June 26, 1719, age 72.

    In regard to the marriage with Joan Smith, in history of New Netherland of O'Callaghan, Vol. ll, page 222, a foot note says:
    "We find it recorded of him, that he was married in April, 1648, at Flushing, to Joan Smith, by Wm Hark, (or Hart), then Sheriff of that place, against the consent of the woman's parents, and without being legally authorized so to do by the Supreme Authority." "As this is an indecent and never heard-of manner of marrying," the sheriff was fined 600 carolus guilders, and "the indecent marriage" was declared null and void. To prevent the daughters of honest and respectable inhabitants being married against the will and without the consent of the parents, by unlawful and unauthorized persons, the bride and bride-groom were fined 300 gl. and ordered to have their marriage again solemnized after three previous proclamations of banns, which was accordingly done."

    Notes:

    Richard was from Wales, and was on the fidelity list of March 7,1647-8 in New Haven, where he married, in 1650 the daughter of John and Thomasine (Fry) Meigs (a son of Vincent Meigs). Like many of the ingabitants of Wales at the present day, (1880), he could not write the English language.
    The first settles of (now) Bridgeport, and members of the church, were Richard Hubbell, sen'r, Isaac Wheeler, James Bennett, sen'r., Samuel Beardsley, Matthew Sherman, Richard Hubbell,jr., David Sherman, and John Odell, Jr., in 1695. It was a part of the town of Stratford. Most of these names are yet familiar in the town of Bridgeport.
    He was admitted a planter at Guilford, Connecticut, February 25, 1653-1654. About 1663 he removed to Fairfield, Connecticut, and was accepted as a freeman of Connecticut colony, October 13, 1664. At Fairfield he was Sergeant of the trainband, and he served as Deputy to the General court at three sessions, May, 1678, 1679, and 1681. He acquired a good estate, and was an original member of the Stratfield church in 1695. He married first about 1651, Elizabeth Meigs , married second about 1669, Elizabeth Gaylord b. October 4, 1647 (daughter of Samuel Gaylord), died probably early in 1688; married third by marriage contract dated April 16, 1688, Abigail, daughter of Rev. Peter Prudden of Milford, and widow of Joseph Walker of Stratford.
    A peculiarity of this family is that he had 2 sons named Samuel, the one by his first wife being called Senior, and the one by his second wife, Junior. His will, made a few months before his death, named his last wife and all his children. The widow died early in 1718, leaving a will.
