    Name:
VETERAN OF PRESS CALLED BY DEATH

Allan Slauson Newsman Here Since 1882

Allan B. Slauson, 79, veteran member of The Oregonian editorial department staff and one-time star reporter of this newspaper died in a Portland hospital Thursday night.

Born in Lysander, N.Y., Mr. Slauson attended Cornell university and first joined The Oregonian in 1882. He came to Portland from Denver, where he had gained his first newspaper experience. His firs position was that of proof reader and in recent years he served as inspiration for the "Old Copyreader" feature articles written for the editorial page by Ben Hur Lampman.

Mr. Slauson remained with The Oregonian until 1893, when he left for Washington, D.C., to become special correspondent for a syndicate. Soon after arrival in the national capital, he was appointed chief of the periodical division of the Congressional library and in 1905 was sent to Portland with the library exhibit for the Lewis and Clark fair.

His return to the northwest resulted in his resigning his library position and for a few years he engaged in the real estate business. In 1916 he again entered the newspaper profession, writing editorials for the old Portland Telegram, and a year later rejoined The Oregonian staff.

He covered many major assignments in his reportorial days and in recent years acted as exchange editor.

Mrs. Slauson died 17 years ago. Mr. Slauson leaves three daughters, Miss Jean Slauson, Oswego; Mrs. Henry Freeman, Portland, and Mrs. Malcolm Crowe, Burlingame, Cal.
