  1. 2.  John RICHMOND was born in 1594 in Ashton Keynes, England; was christened in 1597 in Ashton Keynes, Wiltshire, England; died on 20 Mar 1664 in Taunton, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA.

    Notes:

    Name:
John Richmond, born in 1594. He came from Wiltshire, England, probably from the town of Amesbury. Mr. Harry Richmond of Little Compton found in Bristol, England, a ship's passenger list on which it said that John Richmond of Amesbury in Wiltshire bound for Virginia on a ship sailing in 1635.

John Richmond was one of the purchasers of Taunton, Mass., in 1657. Undoubtedly he was married before he came to this country, but neither the name of his wife nor the date of his marriage have been discovered. He died in Taunton 20 March 1664 age 70.

According to tradition, as a young man he engaged in commercial pursuits on the west coast of Ireland. He became a distinguished officer in the English Civil War, but, having killed his brother Henry, who was with the King's forces, he emigrated to America about 1635. He was undoubtedly married before he came, for one son was certainly born in England, but there is no record of his wife. He was one of the "original purchasers" of Taunton, and a large landowner in the eastern section known as Richmondtown. He was frequently away from Taunton, often in Saco and Newport, where supposedly he was engaged in trade. At least, his trips out of the Plymouth colony do not seem to have been caused by religious persecution, as was the case of most Rhode Islanders, for his gift of 5 acres for the support of the Taunton minister is recoded. He was a man of substantial property, taking up a large amount of land in the South Purchase. He died March 20, 1663/4.
