Joshua RANSOM

Notes:

The record of Joshua's life and career is obscure and involved in much uncertainty. It is obvious from a close review of the Plymouth records that he was a man active in affairs, having numerous land deals, indicating that he was a general trade and property man. After his second marriage his relations to his children seem to have been mainly restricted to John, the son, by his wife, Susanna, and gave him the home at Plympton previous to his death. It seems quite likely that Robert and Mary, the children by Mary Gifford, remained in Rhode Island after their mother's death in their uncle's (Yelverton0Gifford) family, where they were reared.[gifford.ged]

1. Robert RANSOM was born on 15 Sep 1687 in Wexford, Washington County, Rhode Island; died on 23 Jan 1777 in Colchester, New London, Connecticut, USA; was buried in Colchester, New London, Connecticut, USA.
2. Mary RANSOM was born about 1686 in North Kingston, Washington, Rhode Island; died on 16 Dec 1762 in Colchester, New London, Connecticut, USA.

Joshua married Susannah SHELLEY on 10 Mar 1692 in Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA. Susannah (daughter of Robert SHELLEY and Susannah DIMMOCK) was born between 1662-1664; died on 6 Feb 1735 in Halifax, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

2. Joshua RANSOM was born about 1697 in Plympton, Massachusetts; died between Dec 1722 and 01 May 1724.
3. Sarah RANSOM was born in 1696 in Plympton, Plymouth County, Massachusetts; died in 1732.

Notes:

Excerpt from "New England Families Genealogical and Memorial: Third Series, Vol. IV": Robert came to Plymouth, Massachusetts before 1654. He was a member of the church and was admitted a freeman of the colony, December 14, 1697, but he rebelled against the bigotry and intolerance of the Puritan government and was often in court in his younger days. He rsided at Sandwich for a time and was there in 1654, an apprentice of Thomas DEXTER, Jr. who treated him harshly and whom he had before the court. Afterward he bought his time of his employer. He wa quiet and respected, an officer of the town, and a man of property. His children intermarried with some of the most prominent families. In later years he lived at Lakeville, Middleborough, Plymouth county, now the town of Plympton. In 1686 he deeded land to his son Robert, Jr. He was a highway surveyor in 1675.
