    DEATH TAKES VENERABLE FILLMORE AREA RESIDENT, FRANK PADELFORD

    A pioneer passes.
    Frank H. Padelford early Buckhorn area rancher, and venerable citizen of the Fillmore-Piru area, died Saturday, Nov. 16 following a short illness in a Ventura hospital.
    The youngest of six children born April 20, 1871, to Sophia Miranda Willard and Hosea Padelford in Quechee Gorge near Hartland, VT., he lived his 92 years filled with many memories of early hardships of pioneering and present day miracles.
    At the age of three Mr. Padelford came west with his family to the mining camps of Nevada near Ely, and in December of 1887, Mrs. Padelford and her two young sons, Charles and Frank moved to California first to Hueneme for a year then on to what was later to become the Padelford Ranch in Buckhorn area where Mr. Padelford continued to live for the next 75 years.
    He developed the land from sagebrush and Mustard first to apricots then to its present citrus acreage.
    On Sept. 7, 1910 he married Miss Sadie R. Smith in South Pasadena, one of three daughters of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles S. Smit, formerly of Danville, VT. Mrs. Padelford taught at Buckhorn school from 1908 to 1909 where she met her husband then clerk of the board. They became the parents of three children, F. Sumner, Frederick W.. and Allene W. who were reared on the home ranch and educated in local schools.
    Mr. Padelford maintained an active interest in citrus culture and area growth, serving on the boards of the Piru Citrus Association, Buckhorn Elementary school, and the Bank of America. He had varied interests including world travel is rose garden, his grandchildren and great grandchildren, six of each. Eric Padelford, Nancy Noel of Fillmore, Peggy McBurney of Fullerton, Frank Urner of North Hollywood, Ronald Urner a second year cadet at the U.S. Air Academy, Colorado Springs, and Marlene Urner of Fallbrook are the grandchildren. His great grandchildren are Allen and Julie Padelford, Holly and Candy Noel of Fillmore, Shanna McBurney of Fullerton, and Christopher Urner of North Hollywood.
    Mr and Mrs. Padelford celebrated their golden anniversary with an open house at the memorial Building, Sept 7, 1960. This past September they noted their 53rd anniversary with a family party at the Colonial House, Oxnard.
    Mr. Padelford is survived by his widow at the family home; his sons, Sumner of Fillmore and Frederick at the family ranch; his sister, Flora (Mrs. John Alcock) of Los Angeles, and numerous nieces and nephews. His daughter, Allene (Mrs. Frank Urner) preceded him in death in December 1956.
    Funeral services took place at the Skillin Mortuary, Santa Paula, Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment was in the family plot in Bardsdale cemetery. Officiating at the rites were the Rev. Frederick Edwards of the Piru Methodist Church, and the Rev. F. Kenneth Barta, rector of Trinity Episcopal Church.

    BUCKHORN AREA PIONEER, MRS. PADELFORD DIES

    Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at the Piru United Methodist Church for Mrs. Sadie Rhoda Padelford, who died Thursday, Oct 17 in the Acacia Nursing Home at Ojai. The Rev. Shuey Fujishiro officiated with the Rev. Fred Edwards, Jr., of Ojai, former pastor of the Piru church. Interment was in Bardsdale cemetery at the side of her late husband, Frank H. Padelford, who preceded her in death in November, 1963.
    Like her husband, Mrs. Padelford was born in Vermont on Feb 6, 1884. She attended normal school in her home state to prepare for a teaching career, then came to California with her sister to visit a great aunt at San Jose. it was then she decided to remain in this state. her parents followed later and lived in South Pasadena. Because California teacher requirements differed fro those in Vermont, Mrs. Padelford enrolled at a preparatory school at Los Angeles.
    She met her husband, then clerk of the board, when she applied for a teaching post at the Buckhorn School, and was accepted after taking an examination at Ventura. She taught there in 1908 and 1909 and then went to Pasadena as a substitute.
    On Sept. 7, 1910 she became Frank H. Padelford's bride and went to live on the ranch he had homesteaded for 70 years. they celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary on Sept. 7, 1960.
    Following the death of her husband, Mrs. Padelford went to Grey Gables at Ojai to make her home. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, and the Methodist Church.
    She leaves two sons, Frederick Padelford of Buckhorn, and Sumner Padelford of Fillmore; two sisters, Mrs. Frank Cooper and Mrs. Walter Parker of Tipton; three grandsons and three granddaughters, and nine great grandchildren. A daughter, Allene W. preceded her in death.
    Family friends serving as pallbearers were Rodney Peyton, Stephen Warring, Jack Warring, Thurman Tate, Eliza Smith and Donald Vedder.

    SOPHIA MARIA PADELFORD PASSES AT BUCKHORN HOME

    Mrs. Sophia Maria Padelford, aged 88 years, mother of Charles and Frank Padelford and Mrs. W.J. Alcock, who has made her home at Buckhorn for many years, passed away Thursday morning, May 19, 1927. Deceased was a native of Vermont where she was born October 1, 1839, and had been a resident of California close to half a century, most of which time was spent at Buckhorn.
    Funeral services are to be conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Brethren Church, Fillmore, Rev. Coate officiating.
