    Notes:

    Name:
Jonathan Mitchell was the sixth child of my ancestors, MATTHEW & SUSAN (WOOD) MITCHELL, and was baptized on December 16, 1624 in Halifax, Yorkshire, England. He came to New England with his parents in 1635 on the JAMES with Rev. Richard Mather.
As a ten year old child, he was afflicted with a fever that left his arm drawn so that it could not be stretched. The voyage to America, the winter of sickness after arrival, and the death of his relative, Samuel Butterfield, at the hand of the Indians worked to build a strong Christian character in this ladd. At the age of 19, he entered Harvard College. After graduation, he was sought after by churches. The church in Hartford in particular requested him to preach with the hope of him becoming the successor to Thomas Hooker. They sent a man and a horse to bring him to Hartford where he preached his first sermon there on June 24, 1649 form Hebrew 11:27. The Hartford church asked him to become their pastor, but he declined wanting to return to Cambridge where Rev. Shephard was the pastor. After his death, it was unanimously voted that Jonathan Mitchell should be their pastor which he accepted. He was ordained August 21, 1650. At about the same time, his fiance, Sarah Cotton, the daughter of Rev. John Cotton, minister of Boston, unexpectedly died. He married Margaret Shephard, widow of his predecessor at Cambridge church, Rev. Shephard, on November 19, 1650. After serious disagreement with the president of Harvard regarding baptism of infants, he resigned his post as pastor of the Cambridge church.

In 1650, he was chosen a tutor and Fellow of Harvard College. His connection with the church at Cambridge continued eighteen years during which time he wrote on the Book of Genesis and part of Exodus and on the Book of John. At about 44 years of age, he died from a fever. His passing was sadly lamented by all who knew him.

Jonathan & Margaret Mitchell were the parents of several daughters and four sons, two of which graduated from Harvard College (Samuel in 1681 and Jonathan in 1687).
