Thomas HUSE

Name:
The name of Thomas Huse appears in the list of "Snowshoo men" of Captain Hugh March's company belonging to the North Regiment in Essex for operations against the Indians in 1710. In the Newbury Vital Records he is referred to as Sergeant Thomas Huse. Thomas Huse and his brother William were granted land near Contoocook, NY., in 1739 for service as soldiers in the expedition to Canada in 1690.

thomas Huse was a mason. He left a will dated 15 November 1732, proved December 1734, at which time all his children were living.

The will of Hannah, "widow of Thomas Huse of Newbury," was dated 5 February 1737 and was witnessed by Abel Huse. It was proved 23 May 1737. It mentions her three surviving daughter, Mary Holt, Hannah Hays, and Ruth Burnap, and son Ebenezer.

The following is from Currier's "OULD NEWBURY":

"Doctor Greenland sold property 1665-1666 to Israel Webster.....Mr. Webster owned the place until his death 7 December 1683. The next owner recorded was Thomas Huse, a mason, Mr. Webster's son-in-law. He owned it in 1692; and 6 May 1695, he sold it to John Badger of Newbury for L46---from which it was called Badger's Corner."

Thomas married Hannah WEBSTER about 1690 in Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts. Hannah (daughter of Israel WEBSTER and Elizabeth LUNT) was born on 02 Jul 1672 in Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts, USA; died on 12 Apr 1737 in Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

1. Ebenezer HUSE was born on 16 Jan 1695/96 in Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts, USA; died on 31 Jul 1792 in Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts, USA.
2. Joseph HUSE was born on 3 Oct 1712 in Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts, USA; died on 9 Sep 1745.

Name:
Abel Huse, who was born about 1602, probably in Wiltshire, England, came with his wife ELEANOR to Newbury, Massachusetts, not later than 1635. His name is on the monument to "fist settlers' which stands near the banks of the Parker river where the fist landing was made....

Abel Huse died 29 march 1690. His will, dated 7 March 1690, was proved 30 September 1690 and is today filed away in Vol. 49 page 99 of the Essex Court archives, Salem.....

The fact that Abel Huse signed his will with a cross does not mean that he was illiterate, for his signature appears on a number of old papers, but he was a very old man and was on his death-bed when his will was written. ...

Abel Huse and mary Hilton (widow Sears) had eight children. Ruth, the eldest, married John Brown, grandson of Thomas Brown who came over in the ship JAMES from Southampton 5 april 1635. they left sons and daughters whose descendants tell today the story of the Indian attack on Turkey Hill and how narrowly their line missed extinction.

Nothing appears to be known of Sarah Huse, the fifth child, nor of Ebenezer, a girl, the eight child, except that they were mentioned in their father's will in 1690 and were therefore doubtless living at that time.

Abel married Mary HILTON on 25 May 1663 in Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts. Mary was born in 1635; died on 28 Oct 1699 in Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

WILLIAM HILTON

Mary Hilton alias Downer who married Thomas Sears and Abel Huse has sometimes been placed in this family, but she had children at an age far too advanced to be the mary Hilton, daughter of William, who was baptized in 1619. Her parentage remains a mystery.
