Excerpt from "One Thousand Years of Hubbard History": After His parents had settled in 1635 in Ipswich, he entered Harvard College and graduated, a Master of Arts, in a class of nine, the second Tuesday in August, 1642, in the first class ever graduated from an American college. He also studied medicine there, in conjunction with his other studies. May 18, 1653, he was made a freeman......July 4, 1656, he began to preach in Ipswich as the colleague of Mr. Thomas Cobbett. November 17, 1658, he was ordained minister and began then to make himself felt in the colony as a scholar, historian, and divine...........Many of his sermons have been printed. His last publication was entitled "Dying Testimony to the Order of the Churches," prepared jointly by himself and Mr. John Higginson of Salem. March 19, 1677, his "Indian Wars" received the approbation of the colonial censors and was soon published in Boston. - Fact: Son of Thomas Leverett and Ann Fitch
Notes:
Name:
Although claimed in some sources to have come to New England in 1633 with his parents, he is not found in records in New England until mid-1639 when he joined the Boston church and married his first wife, and he did not become a freeman until 1640. If he had come in 1633 at the age of 17, we would expect him to have joined the church and become a freeman much earlier, which suggests his arrival more likely in 1638. he had probably been left behind in England to continue his education. His only surviving sibling, Ann, was admitted to Boston church 20 February 1641/2, indicating she came about a year or two after him. John settled in Boston, but made several trips back to England; from about 1645-1648 with Israel Stoughton to fight with Parliamentary forces during the Civil War; in 1651 with Robert Sedgwick to lobby Cromwell to help New England make war on the Dutch in New Amsterdam; and from about 1655 to 1662 as the agent of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in England.
