Ancestry.com: History of New London, CT - William Hough, died August 10th, 1683.
The family of Samuel Hough, oldest son of William, is registered at Saybrook, and in connection with the record it is stated that William Hough, was a son of Edward Hough, of West Chester in Cheshire, England. It has not been ascertained that this Edward Hough emigrated to America, but a widow Ann Hough that died in Gloucester, Mass., in 1672, aged eighty-five years, was perhaps his relict, and the mother of William Hough.
William Hough married Sarah, daughter of Hugh Calkin, October 28th, 1635.

    Children: Hannah b. July 31, 1646; Abiah b. Sept. 15, 1648; Sarah b. Mar. 23,1651; Samuel b. Mar. 9, 1652/3; John b. Oct. 17, 1655; William b. Oct. 13, 1657; Jonathan b. Feb. 7, 1659/60; Deborah b. Oct. 21, 1662; Abigail b. Mar 5, 1665/6; Anna b Aug. 29, 1667.
Hannah Hough married John Borden of Lyme; Abiah married the second William Douglas; Sarah married David Carpenter.
The marriage of William Hough and the births of three children, are recorded at Gloucester; the remainder in New London, but it is mentioned that Samuel was born in Saybrook. the father being a house builder might have been temporarily employed in that place.
The last four children of William Hough are not afterward found at New London; it is probable that they were scattered in other towns. Samuel the oldest son settled in Saybrook. Capt. John Hough, the second son, was a noted man of his time, powerful in frame and energetic in character. His wife was Sarah Post, of Norwich, and Capt. Hough was at one tie a resident in that place. His death was caused by a fall fro the scaffolding of a house which he was building in New London, August 26th, 1715. No external injury could be discovered, but he lived only an hour. Such an event was sufficient at that tie to move the whole town.
William Hough, Jun., married Ann, daughter of Samuel Lothrop, of Norwich. He died April 22d, 1705. His relict, Widow Ann Hough, died in Norwich Nov. 19th, 1745.

    Notes:

    Name:
"Hyde Genealogy": What renders it almost certain that three of the seven daughters of Hester Hyde and John Post must have died previously to 18 of Jan., 1686, and probably unmarried, is that by deed of that date, upon the Windham records, it appears that William Hyde willed to the daughters of his only daughter, Hester Post, certain lands in Windham. That a controversy arose between the eldest son of her brother and the devisees, in relation to the validity of this will; and that a compromise took place between him and the three sons-in-law of Hester Hyde and John Post; Caleb Abel, John Hough, and Nathaniel Rudd. And by their deed the latter three conveyed, to the said oldest son of Samuel Hyde the first, one-half of the lands in dispute, in compromise of his claim. And no mention is made of any other granddaughters of the testator, as being in existence, to make any claim to the lands under the will devising the same to the daughters of the testator's daughter, Hester Post.

    Notes:

Excerpt from "Calkins family (66)" by Pane-Joyce Genealogy @babbage.clarku.edu:

"Hugh Calkins was a radical, in religion a non-conformist, and living in the troublous times of Charles, the First, soon became satisfied that there were safer countries than England and Wales-for men who wished to worship God according to the dictates of their own consciences. Accordingly, he with his wife, Ann, and John, their son, then four years old, joined a body of emigrants called the "Welch Conspany", and with their pastor, Rev. Richard Blinman, embarked and came to American, about 1638 or 1640. They settled first at Green's Harbor (now Marshfield) in New Plymouth colony, but religious distentions arising, Mr. Blinman, Hugh Calkins and others removed to Gloucester. Hugh Calkins became one of the first board of selectmen, and in 1650 was chosen deputy to the general court of that year to Connecticut colony, some say to Saybrook, but he could not have remained there long, as he was soon in New London. The Connecticut colonial records show that Hugh Calkins was deputy at the general court from New London, May 20, 1652. In all, he served twelve times as deputy from New London. By order of the general court, held October 3, 1654, Hugh and another were appointed a deputy magistrate. In 1660 he again changed his residence to the place where the city of Norwich now stands, then a wilderness and owned by the Mohegan Indians. Just previously a treaty had been concluded, by and between the celebrated major Mason and others with the Mohegan chiefs, by which a sterling. Hugh and his son, John, were of the thirty-five original proprietors. Hugh appears in the colonial records as a deputy from Norwich to the general court, ten times. He was a active worker there in all measures for the public good; and also at home constantly identified with public interests. He was a deacon in the first church built in Norwich.

Freeman 27 Dec. 1642 in Gloucester, selectman 1643-48, rep. 1650-52. In New London, selectman, rep., and town clerk.

    • Fact: 1636, Removed to Hartford, Connecticut

    Notes:

Stephen came from Othem, Kent, England, to Newtowne (Cambridge), Massachusetts about 1634 and then joined the group under REV. THOMAS HOOKER which settled Hartford, Connecticut. He moved from Hartford to the Oyster River Quarter of Saybrook about 1649, where he died.

Excerpt from NEGH Register: Stephen and Elinor had just one child baptized at Hollingbourne, and the Post family appears to have left Hollingbourne altogether by the mid-seventeenth century, given that the burial of Stephen's father in 1639 is the last entry for the surname in the register. Stephen apparently moved to Otham by 1629 when his second child was baptized there. "Stephen Post of Otham, carpenter" was bondsman on 1 Mr 1632 for the marriage intentions of his sister Mary Post with Allen Wenn. Stephen signed the Otham parish register as churchwarden in 1632, and was mentioned in that register for the last time on 3 Sep 1633 when his son Joseph was buried. Stephen Post and his family immigrated to new England between that date and 1 Sep 1634 when he was first mentioned in the records of Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1636 he ws one of the first proprietors of Hartford, Connecticut. About 1649 he moved to sAybrook, Connecticut, where he lived until his death a decade later.

Stephen married Eleanor PANTON on 17 Oct 1625 in Langley, Kent, England. Eleanor was born in 1604/5 in Otham, Kent, England; died on 13 Nov 1670 in Saybrook, Middlesex County, Connecticut. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Excerpt from New England Families: William was among the founders of Hartford, Connecticut, and his name is on the monument to the first settlers there. He was a man of considerable importance and wealth for his day, and was frequently selectman and held other places of trust.

"Hyde Genealogy": The name of William Hyde, first appears at hartford, Conn., in 1636. And his name is on the monument in the old cemetery at that place as one of the original settlers; and he had lands assigned to him there.

Many families of the name of Hyde had been settled in different parts of England for five or six hundred years prior to the settlement of New England. One of the names, Sir Nicholas Hyde, was chief justice of the court of King's Bench in 1626; another, Sir Robert Hyde, was chief justice of the court of common pleas in 1660. And a third, Sir Edward Hyde, afterwards the Earl of Clarendon, was lord chancellor at the restoration, 1660; and was the grandfather of Queen Mary the 2d, and Queen Ann, and of Edward hyde, Lord Cornbury, who was one of the provincial governors of New York.

William Hyde the first of Norwich, was a contemporary of Sir Robert Hyde and of the Earl of Clarendon; but was undoubtedly of humbler origin. I have not been able to ascertain from what part of England he came; to what family he belonged; or where he first landed in this country, or the precise time when he arrived here. He probably, however, came over in 1633, with the Rev. Thomas Hooker, the first minister of hartford; sojourned a short time at Newton, Mass., and removed with him to Hartford, in 1636. The time of his removal to Saybrook, is not ascertained, but he owned lands in Hartford as late as 1639. He probably went to Saybrook soon after that, and his dau. was m. there early in 1652. No information has been obtained as to the name of his wife, or when or where she died. ....
