William GATES

Excerpt from "The New England Historical and Genealogical Register": He resided in Conway, where he was a member of the Committee on Correspondence and Inspection in 1777 and in the same year was a member of the committee to form a remonstrance to send to the General Court on account of calling in the money on the loan notes; also served as surveyor of highways in 1778, 1781 and 1783. He marched in August 1757 as a private to Capt. James Caldwell's company on the Alarm for the relief of Fort William Henry (Massachusetts Archives; Muster Rolls, vol. 95, p. 448). He appears to have been the Sergt. William Gates in Capt. Abel Dinsmore's company in 1777 in the American Revolution.

Excerpt from "The New England Historical and Genealogical Register": From Massachusetts military records it appears that he served inplace of his son William, probable in 1748, from 8 Aug. to 26 Aug., under Major Daniel Heywood. The company marched on an alarm to the defence of the Western frontiers by order of Col. J. Chandler. William Gates, Benjamin's son, described as a servant of James Goodwin, had probably been bound out, in accordance with the cutom at that time. In 1757 he was in service as a soldier in Col. Frye's Regiment. After Benjamin's death his widow petitioned for an allowance on account of his sickness while serving as a soldier.

Benjamin married Bethulia RICE on 05 Apr 1727 in Sudbury, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts. Bethulia (daughter of Jonathan RICE and Ann DARBY) was born on 24 Mar 1704 in Sudbury, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
