    Early Saxon Kings
    600-871

The Anglo-Saxon occupiers of England had completed the process of driving the Celts out of the country by 613. Thereafter the territory was divided into seven kingdoms: Kent, Sussex, Essex, East Anglia, Wessex, Mercia, and Northumbria, collectively known as The Heptarchy. Some of the kingdoms, most notably Kent and Northumbria, fought to convert their neighbours to Christianity, brought to England by St. Augustine in 597.

The seven kingdoms were all intent on establishing supremacy over, or defending themselves from, their neighbours. Northumbria was the first to gain the upper hand, followed by Mercia and the Wessex. Ecgberht became King of Wessex in 802. He steadily increased the power and influence of Wessex, and in 825 defeated the Mercians at the Battle of Ellandun. Four years later, Northumbria submitted to him, and from 829 Ecgberht was recognized by his fellow kings as King of all England. His grandson, Alfred the Great, consolidated these gains.

Egbert married Lady REDBURGA. Lady was born about 788. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
