Roger De Mortimer, Knt., 4th Earl of March, 7th Earl of Ulster, Lord Mortimer of Wigmore, son and heir, was born at Usk on 11 Apr 1374, and succeeded to title and estates when seven years old. He declared heir presumptive to the Crown by King Richard II in October 1385, and was made a knight by the King on 23 Apr 1390. he was summoned to Parliament on 15 Oct 1397, and had a great popular welcome. he was careful to do nothing to justify the King Richard II's suspicions, but feeling his position to be somewhat insecure, he returned to Ireland, whither his enemy, the Duke of Surrey (his brother-in-law), whither his enemy, the Duke of Surrey (his brother-in-law), was ordered to follow and capture him. Ireland was Mortimer's chief care, but he possessed little power there, the estates having been devastated and engaged in petty campaigns against the native chieftains. Roger De Mortimer, Earl of March and of Ulster, while engaged in a rash attack on some of the Leinster clans, was killed by O'Brien's men on 20 July 1398, and was buried at Wigmore Abbey. The Wigmore chronicler says that he was riding unattended, attired in the Irish manner, in front of his army, and was unrecognized by those who killed him. The death of the heir to the throne at the hands of the Irish induced King Richard II to undertake his last fatal expedition to Ireland.

Edmund De Mortimer, Knt., 3rd Earl of march, Lord Mortimer of Wigmore, Lord of Trim and Connaught, Ireland, is the son and heir of Roger de Mortimer, Knt., by Philippe daughter of William de Montagu, 1st Earl of Salisbury. He was born at Llangoed in Llyswen, co. Brecon, Wales, on 1 Feb 1351/2, and succeeded his father in his tenth year. He became a ward of King Edward III, and was closely associated with the King's sons, especially Edward (the Black prince). By the death of his wife's father in 1368 he became lord of Ulster and of Connaught, as also lord of Clare in Suffolk 'jure uxoris', and was also styled Earl of Ulster. He was summoned to parliament from 8 Jan. 1370/1 as Earl of March. In the domestic politics of the time Mortimer was on the side of the Prince of Wales and the clergy against John of Gaunt and the Barons. The death of the Black Prince weakened his position. With the accession of King Richard II, power remained with Lancaster, but the next rightful heir was Mortimer's own son. He was appointed lieutenant of Ireland on 22 Oct 1379, it being convenient for the party of Lancaster to get him out of the country. Ulster, Connaught, and Meath, over which he bore nominal sway, had long been the most disorderly districts. Edmund De Mortimer, Earl of March, having caught cold in crossing a river in winter time in Munster, died testate in the Dominican Friary at Cork on 27 Dec 1381.

Lionel of Clarence (of Antwerp), K.G., Duke of Clarence, Earl of Ulster 'jure uxoris', third but second surviving son, was born at Antwerp on 29 Nov 1338. He was married in his fourth year at the Tower of London on 9 Sep 1342 to Elizabeth De Burgh. She was born at Carrickfergus Castle on 6 July 1332. The marriage was consummated ten years later in 1352 and by this marriage he acquired the vast estates in Ireland of the de Burgh family, as well as a large part (including the honour of Clare) of the estates of the Earls of Gloucester and Hertford, in right of his wife's paternal grandmother. Elizabeth De burgh died at Dublin on 10 Dec 1363.

Lionel married Elizabeth DE BURGH on 09 Sep 1342 in Tower of London, London, ENGL. Excerpt from Blood Royal: Thomas fought at the Battle of Crecy August 26, 1346. About 1346, during his absence abroad, Joan his wife went through a form of marriage (Possibly under compulsion) with William Montagu, Earl of Salisbury. On November 17, 1349, the Pope ordered that Joan should be restored to her lawful husband.

He fought at Crecy on 26 Aug 1346, in the Prince's division, and after the battle superintended the counting of the slain. She was married in the King's Chapel at Havering-atte-Bower on 9 Feb 1320/1, she being about eight years of age, to Richard Fitz Alan (Copped Hat), 3rd Earl of Arundel and 4th Earl of Surrey, son and heir of Edmund Fitz Alan, 8th Earl of Arundel, Baron of Oswestry, co. Salop, Baron of Clun, co. Salop, by Alice, daughter of William de Warenne. He was born about 1313, and was about seven years of age at time of marriage. In 1330-1 he was fully restored in blood and honours and obtained restitution of the Castle and honour of Arundel, becoming Earl of Arundel. Their marriage was annulled by Papal mandate on 4 Dec 1344 on the ground of his minority and of his never having willingly consented to the match. He took a distinguished part the wars with France, was Admiral of the West 1340-41 and 1345-47, commanded the second division at the Battle of Crecy, and was at the fall of Calais in 1347.
