    Name:
    V.D. Thurston was born Aug. 13, 1818, in Erie county, New York, son of Thomas and Electa (Wilcox) Thurston; was educated in the schools of the district, labored on the farm, served three years of mercantile life, and returning to the old homestead remained there until the immigration of the family westward in September, 1850. He married Almira Allen in 1850, who was born in Vermont, and was the mother of 3 children, vix.: Herbert D., born April 7, 1851; Thomas, May 25, 1853; Jabez A., Feb. 3, 1858. The year of his arrival in this county he located on a farm of 500 acres in this tp. In 1852 his present dwelling was completed, and since that period he has continued to reside there. Mrs. Thurston died May 25, 1864. Her sons were educated in the schools of Jackson and Grass Lake. In 1867 Mr. T., married Harriet Peckham, a native of Monroe county, New York. In political matters he is not ambitious, yet the people of the twp. conferred upon him important offices.

    Name:
    Mr. Thurston was a farmer and shoemaker in Aurora, New York. He was a stern, strong-willed man, a decided Universalist, and deacon of the church in Aurora, a Whig, and after a Republican, a man of character, honored by his fellow-citizens with several offices of trust; served in the war of 1812; obtained leave to go home and make pair of boots, his father taking his place in the army. While at home he heard that his father had been killed by the Indians. he and his brother Daniel immediately started for Buffalo (which had been burned by the British), with two ox teams, and met their father just out of the city. They loaded their teams with ammunition, which had been left by the American army, and carried it to a place of safety from the British. In 1850 he sold his farm and moved to Leoni, where he had a farm of 500 acres; P.O. address, Grass lake, Michigan.

  1. 8.  Daniel THURSTON was born on 24 Aug 1752 in Newbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts (son of Nathaniel THURSTON and Miner CHASE); died on 1 May 1850.

    Name:
    Mr. Thurston lived in Fitchburg till after the birth of his son Enoch, but probably very soon after that he moved to Windsor, Vt., where he remained till about 1787, when he removed to Scipio, Cayuga Co., New York. Here his house and its contents, including his family records, were burned. In 1806 he purchased 700 acres of land of the Holland Co. in Aurora, New York, whither he migrated with two ox teams, erected a log house, and commenced life in what was then a dense forest, except about ten acres which had been cultivated by thew Indians. Here they experienced al the hardships of pioneer life. Sometime after the death of his wife he took a horse-back journey to Massachusetts to visit his mother, but she was not living. He was a deacon in the Baptist church in Scipio, but afterward changed his connection to the Universalist church inAurora. He was a man of "good disposition and regular habits." he served in the revolutionary war, and as a substitute for his son Thomas in the war of 1812, and was at the burning of buffalo, New York. His large farm was divided between his sons, Enoch giving $400 for his choice. he was a staunch Whig in politics. He spent the last days of his life with his son Thomas, and with him moved to Leoni, Jackson Co., Mich., P.O., Grass Lake.

    Daniel married Hannah HILTON in Apr 1780. Hannah was born in of Fitchburg, Massachusetts; died in 1811. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
