Mr. Coggeshall, in 1698 was a member of the Town Council of Jamestown, R.I. May, 1704, he was appointed Head Warden of Jamestown, R.I. In 1704 and 1706 was Deputy from Jamestown, R.I., and May, 1707, being of Kingstown, R.I., made complaint to the General Assembly of the Wardens of Jamestown, R.I. The earmarks of his cattle, a hole in the left ear and a slit in the right ear, was recorded in Portsmouth, R.I., August 9, 1710. In 1711 and 1715 he was Deputy to the General Assembly from Portsmouth, R.I. He was a farmer, his farm embracing what is now known as the "Redwood Farm" in Portsmouth, R.I. In 1711 he sold two hundred thirty acres of land in Kingstown,R.i., to David Green for six hundred pounds. he was buried at the Portsmouth, R.I., Friends Burying Grounds. His will was proved June 10, 1717.

Daniel married Mary MOWRY on 23 Oct 1689 in Portsmouth, Newport County, Rhode Island. Mary (daughter of Joseph MOWRY and Mary WILBORE) was born on 7 Oct 1672 in Jamestown, Rhode Island; died after 1724 in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

He came to this country with his father in the ship "Lyon" on September 16, 1632, died Portsmouth, R.I., of Measels, on May 1, 1688, and was buried on his own grounds at Portsmouth, R.I.; married (1) at the house of his brother-in-law, Peter Easton, in Newport, R.I.; onDecember 22, 1652, JOAN WEST, daughter of Matthew West, of Newport, R.I. She died Portsmouth, R.I., April 24, 1676, aged 45 years. he married (2) in his own house at Portsmouth, R.I., June 21, 1676, REBECCA RUSSELL, a Quakeress from Hawkshead, Lancashire, England. She afterwards moved to Lewes, Del., with her tow children, and married Thomas Harford, of Lewes, Del. He held several minor offices, but devoted most of his time to farming. After his father's death, he purchased a farm of about two hundred acres near the boundary of Newport and Portsmouth, and at the time of his death it had been increased to about three hundred sixty acres. He made his home but a few rods from the shore - not far from the Cornell farm at the north. The cellar and well of the house can still be seen. he left the farm to three of his sons in equal share. Daniel was given the homestead portion, and later on built a house near the road. This house is still standing. The farm is known as the Redwood Farm, deriving the name from Abraham Redwood who purchased it of the Coggeshall heirs. He was the founder of the Redwood Library of Newport. A lane leads from the road, and at the south of it, not far from the old house, was the family cemetery where it is supposed Joshua and his family were buried. the next farm south was given to his sonJohn, whose house was built near the road. This house is also standing and these two farms of Daniel and john are now owned by Mr.Bradford Norman. The headstones of the graves of John and his wife Mary are still standing, only a short distance west of the house.

Joshua's farm was at the south. His house was only a short distance from John's, a brook dividing them. It was the custom in those days to locate the home near a spring or book. This farm is still in the family of Mr. William Coggeshall, having passed from generation to generation by will or deed. The old farm house was standing till within a few years, when it was destroyed by fire.

He arrived at Boston in September, 1632, in the ship "Lyon", the vessel which also brought the Indian Apostle John Eliot and Roger Williams. Where he first located is still a matter of conjecture, though it is presumed to have been Roxbury, as he joined the First Church of that place, then under the pastoral charge of the Apostle John Eliot. This must have been done very soon after his arrival as he was admitted a freeman November 6, 1632, and one of the necessary qualifications for this membership, was the fellowship of some one of the churches. On the list of church members, his name appears number thirty and that of his wife number thirty-one.

For some unknown reason, possibly because of the better business outlook, he withdrew from the Roxbury church and united with the First Church of Boston, April 20, 1634, Rev. John Wilson, pastor, where he was soon elected a deacon. He lived on Washington Street, opposite Water Street, next to the home of Anne Hutchinson. We note from old records, that in the allotment of lands for pasturage to the inhabitants of Boston, from territory adjoining the town, one William Townsend received from Muddy River, now called Brookline, eight acres--"bounded on the northwest with a swamp by Mr. John Coggeshall's wigwam." By 'wigwam' was meant a shelter for his cattle. A further grant was alloted him of two hundred acres of pasturage at the south of Saugus River, which must have embraced a portion, if not the whole, of the present Point of Pines. Wherever his name occurs, it invariably has the prefix "Mr.," signifying in those times dignity and quality, and indicating something more than the simple form of polite address of the present day.



Mr. John Clarke, one of fifty-eight disfranchised church members, proposed to some of his censured brethren, among these being John Coggshall, to remove from the jurisdiction. Their purpose was to go southward, but while their vessel was passing around Cape Cod, they crossed by land, with a view to sail afterwards to Long Island or Delaware Bay. At Providence they met with friends at Plymouth, they concluded to settle at Aquidneck, now part of Rhode Island. Acting upon this determination, they went back to Boston and prepared for their removal. Early in the spring they took their final leave of Massachusetts, and pursuing their tedious journeys though the wilderness, which could not have been exempt from many difficulties and discomforts, reached their new point of settlement, the northern end of the island called by the Indians, Pocasset, which name was retained by the settlers till changed to Portsmouth.

Matthew West was possible a brother or cousin to Francis, as he was at Lynn in 1636 and at Newport in 1646. This Matthew West is the ancestor of the West family whose descendants lived in Stonington and Quiambaug.

"The Wildbores In America": As we had proof that William Wilbore was related to the first Samuel of Boston but did not know how, we placed him with the sons of Samuel for convenience and put an explanation in the front of the book. But now the article foregoing on the English Wilbores' shows he was the son of John of Braintree England who was first cousin to Samuel Wilbore of Boston.


The descendants of the family of Samuel Wilbore, the first of the name in America may be divided into two groups, namely, descendants of his son Shadrach Wilbore o Taunton, whose descendants are mainly in Massachusetts and William Wilbore, of Portsmouth, whose descendants settle mainly in Rhode Island and scattered throughout Connecticut and New York State before 1800.

The Little Compton, R.I., branch are all descended from William of Portsmouth. To the present time it has not been possible to ascertain the exact parentage of William but we do know that he was a near relative of Samuel, Sr., being either a grandson or nephew, for Captain Samuel Wilbore, Jr., son of Samuel, in his will dated August 21, 1678, makes the following statement. "I do freely give and bequeath unto my cousin, William Wilbore senior 250 acres of land in the Narragansett Country to him and his heirs forever"

Later on in the same will the following statement occurs: "I do will that my son-in-law Lieut. Latham Clarke and my cousin, William Wilbore, Sr., shall take care of my deeds in the Narragansett Country and see to recording them and to act with my partners as though I were personally present, in behalf of my executrix."

The above clearly proves that although William was not Samuel's son, he was nearly related to him.

"Cousin" at that time was sometimes used as we now use it and at other times it was used for niece or nephew and other relationships and simply meant kinsman or relative.....

William Wilbore of Portsmouth was a weaver of cloth which helps to support my contention that the Wilbores were cloth merchants. It was he who paid the five and forty shilling for Shadrach Wilbore at the time of his imprisonment by Andros at Bristol. He seems to have been in better circumstances than Shadrach as is shown by the inventories.

Practically all of William's life after his marriage was spent in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, as was that of Samuel, Jr., having settled there when Samuel, Sr., and his fellow Colonists settled the island of Aquidneck, now known as the Island of Rhode Island, in 1638.

William Wilbore died in 1710 according to tradition at Tiverton. His will was made March 1, 1710, and proved August 15, 1710.....he gives as follows: "...To son John Wilbore's two children, John and Mary Records, 30 pounds; to son Daniel Wilbore all land in the first division, great neck in Swansea; to son Samuel 43 pounds which he owes me; to daughter Mary Mowrey money that she owes me and then to her children; to son Joseph Wilbore 100 pounds in money; to son John Wilbore 20 pounds in money; to son Benjamin Wilbore the money which is due me from Daniel Wilcox; to daughter Martha Sherman 10 pounds and to daugher Joan 10 pounds; to four sons, John, William, Joseph and Samuel, all my lands that I now have in the township of Little Compton equally divided between then..."

LITTLE COMPTON FAMILIES:

He was called cousin several times in the will o Samuel Wilbore Jr., the son of Samuel Wilbore o Boston, who was born in Braintree, England, the son of Nicholas and Elizabeth Wilbore of Sible Heddingham, Essex County, England, and grandson of Nicholas and Ann Wilbore of Colchester, Essex County, England

He first appeared in the legal records when his cousin Samuel of Boston transferred to him a piece of land in Portsmouth, 10 July 1654. He also owned land touching the land of Samuel Sr. and also of Samuel Jr. in Portsmouth, on the west road there near the coal mines. He lived on the farm which later became the Burrington Anthony farm, on the road that leads to the ferry, bound on the south by Freeborne Street.

Besides owning land in Portsmouth, he bought much land in Little Compton and about 1690 four of his sons settled there--Samuel, William Jr., John and Joseph. He had two other sons, Daniel who settled in Swansea, and Benjamin who setled in Dartsmouth.

Samuel owned what is now the Oliver H. Wilbor Place, Joseph settled on what was later the Isaac W. Howland place on the road south of the Commons, John Settled on the place later owned by Walter Bullock on the Long Highway, and son William owned what was afterwards the Ephraim Sisson place near the South Shore.
