    In the Rolls Office, Chancery Lane, London, is a large volume containing a record of the passengers "passing beyond the seas" between Christmas 1631 and Christmas 1632. Under the date of June 22, 1632, is a list of twenty-three names, the fourth being that of John Coggeshall, the first of his name to come to America. A paper contributed to the 'New England Historical and Genealogical Register' (Vol. LXXIII, pg. 19-32. Genealogical Research in England. Coggeshall, contributed by Hon. Frederick Samuel Fish, A.B. of South Bend, Ind., and communicated by the committee on English Research) contains an account of John Coggeshall's line as far as traced up to this time. The information is derived from various wills, court records, etc., and is in part as follows:

    "1. John Coggeshall 'the Elder', of Halstead, co. Essex, gentleman, the testator of 1600, died 1 Jan. and was buried at Halstead 3 Jan. 1600/1. He married first ELIZABETH ?; and secondly, probably about 1564 or earlier, KATHERINE ?, who survived him, was one of the two executors who proved his will at Braintree, co. Essex, 8 Jan. 1600/1, and was living 22 march 1608/9, when she and her son John were taxed 5s. on goods valued at L3. He held Munchensies in Halstead. . . situated near Coggeshall bridge, on the left-hand side of the road leading from Halstead to Colchester . . .He made great additions to the house in 1563, and died 1st January 1600. . .The 'great additions' which John Coggeshall made to his house in 1563 may have been for the purpose of preparing a suitable abode for his first or, more likely, his second wife. He is said to have been at one time a merchant in London. At Halstead he built also an almshouse, which had on the architrave of the porch the following inscription: 'John Coggeshall did Bild this Hous in Ao MD63. . ."
