    Smuel Carpenter was born October 8, 1846, in Belmont County, Ohio; assisted his father on the farm until twenty-five years of age. On the 24th February, 1872, he married Miss Jemima Pugh, who was born November 28, 1845. They had a family of five children, one son and four daughters; but three living. Soon after his marriage he located on section 32 where he still resides. In 1876 he was elected justice of the peace of York township, serving in that capacity three years. He and his wife are members of the Christian church.

    Robert was born in the Ohio Territory in the area that became Noble County in 1850.
    Robert and his wife, Sevilla Gates are buried in Dover Cemetery just a few miles outside of Powhatan Point, Ohio. Sevilla was the daughter of George and Sevilla Stiehl Gates who are buried a few miles away in the Boger Cemetery. Over the years their tombstones had toppled over due to ground settling. In 1997 the original stones were up-righted and repaired. Birth and death dates taken from those tones. There is a conflict in their marriage date. The Belmont County records show that their marriage license was issued in January 3, 1822, however, their Family Bible states that their wedding date was April 18, 1822. The farm that they lived on was given to Sevilla by her father. There appears to be a problem between Robert and his father-in-law. the farm was never titled in Robert's name but passed from Sevilla to her son, Robert.

    Almost a Centenarian, Mrs. Sevilla Gates Carpenter, widow of the late Robt (sic) Carpenter, died at the residence of her son-in-law, A.W. Burkhart, in Washington Tp., on Saturday morning, 6 o'clock am, of the infirmities of age. Sevilla Gates was born in York Tp, June 24, 1800, and died December 3, 1898 at the age of 98 years, 5 months 9 days. She was married to Robert Carpenter in the year 1822. To this union eleven children were born, of which five are sill living, her husband having gone before her in July, 1879, and also six children. Of those still living are: Mrs. Elizabeth Bonar, of York Township, who is in her 76th year; Mr. Robert Carpenter, Jr.; Mr. Samuel Carpenter, both of York Township: Mrs. G.W. Hendershot and Mrs. A.W. Burkhart, both of Washington Tp. Mrs. Carpenter never lived outside of York Tp. except the first three years after marriage living on Wills Creek Guernsey Co. and the last six years in Washington Tp, with her youngest daughter, Mrs. Burkhart. She was a consistent member of the Christian Church for 70 years. She was kind and affectionate mother and greatly loved by all who knew her. the funeral services took place Sunday, after which the remains were followed by a large number of relatives and friends to their last resting place in the family burying ground, near Captina, O. Yours, respt, C.T.Rock

    Sevilla is buried in Dover Cemetery just a few miles from her parents. Over the years, Sevilla's and Robert's headstones had toppled over due to the settling of the ground. In 1997 the stones were up righted and repaired. Her birth and death dates taken from those stones are:
    Born June 4, 1801 and died December 4, 1898 according to her tombstone, which differs from her obituary.

    "York was one of the original civil townships and erected November 25, 1801, as follows: The third to begin on the Ohio river at the southeast corner of the township of Pultney.......thence up the river to the place of beginning, to be called and known by the township of York.     "George Gates is buried in the Boger Cemetery, York Township, Belmont Co., near the junction of State Road 7 and S.R. 148. He emigrated from Germany to eastern PA., then to Washington Co., PAS., in 1790, then to Washington and Belmont Cos. in Ohio, near the boundary with present day Monroe Co. His will is on file in Belmont Co. and the following children are named: 1. Mary; 2, Susan; 3. Daniel;4. Valentine; 5. Henry; 6. George; 7 Solomon; 8. Sevilla; and 9. John."

    "Early in the month of April 1819 a colony of ten Swiss families embarked in a flat boat......After leaving Wheeling they were informed that at Captina there was a great quantity of vacant land, and that there they would find two men (Henry Sweppy and George Goetz) who could speak German, and were urged to stop there. On the 15th day of September they landed there and were kindly received and cordially welcomed by the old settlers of the Valley of Captina, viz: the Greens, Lemleys, Moores, Browns, Goetz, Sweppy, Ruble, Smith, and others."
