  1. 1.  Seth EATON was born on 06 Apr 1739 in Middleboro, Plymouth County, Massachusetts (son of Barnabas EATON and Mehitable ALDEN); died on 20 Feb 1823 in Middleboro, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.

    Notes:

    Name:
Marriage intentions were filed at Dartmouth, 3 March 1764 between Seth and Sarah Delano, daughter of Jethro Delano and his wife Elizabeth Pope, born at Dartmouth, 14 October 1741. There is no proof that the marriage took place (Delano en. 461, says she did not marry Seth and died unm.) Sarah was sister of Calvin Delano who married Mary Alden, No. 895, second cousin of Seth Alden; and sister to Bethia Delano.

In Seth's first marriage intentions (1764) he was "of Middleborough"; in the second (1768) he was "of Dartmouth." He resided at Dartmouth until at least 10 October 1774, when he bought land in Middleborough from Joseph Alden, and presumably he removed to Middleborough shortly after.

On 9 February 1775 Barnabas Eaton of Middleborough gave to his sons Seth and Nathan Eaton, husbandmen of Middleborough, all of his homestead farm except that given to his six daughters and other two sons (Plymouth Co LR, 70:175).

Seth was a private in Massachusetts troops in the Revolutionary War (MF, 9:58, 10:66: DAR Patriot Index). He served in Capt. Joshua White's company, Col. Ebenezer Sprout's regiment which marched 8 December 1775 with service of 5 ays on an alarm at Howland's Ferry, Rhode Island. He also served in the same company and regiment from his enlistment of 6 May 1778 to 9 May on an alarm at Dartmouth; the roll was dated at Middleborough. He also served in Capt. Joshua White's company, Col. Ebenezer White's regiment; he enlisted on 1 August 1780 and was discharged on 4 August; the company marched to Tiverton, Rhode Island, on an alarm; the roll was sworn to at Middleborough (MSSR, 5:283).

Seth Eaton of Middleborough, husbandman, on 9 February 1775 received land from his father Barnabas Eaton. On 25 July 1791 Seth and Nathan Eaton both of Middleborough, yeomen, "having received a Deed jointly and severly of Our Honour father Barnabas Eaton late of Middleborough," divided their land: Seth Eaton, r., was a witness (Plymouth Co LR, 70:175-76, 73:143).

The 1790 census for Middleborough lists Seth Eaton with two males over age 16 and one female (M637-9, p. 358). The 1880 listing for Seth Eaton in Middleborough is too young (oldest male age 26-45, presumably his son); in 1810 the only listing is for Seth Eaton, Jr. In 1820, the family of Seth Eaton, Jr., included two males over age 45, one of which may be his father (M33-50, p.335).

Seth married Bethiah DELANO on 12 Mar 1768 in Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts. Bethiah (daughter of Jethro DELANO and Elizabeth POPE) was born on 17 Mar 1730 in Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts; died on 16 Dec 1803 in Middleboro, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

He married, perhaps about 1660, Mary Simmons, daughter of Moses and Sarah (?) Moses Simmons, in his will dated 17 June 1689 and proved 15 September 1691, bequeathed to "my daughter Mary, the wife of Joseph Alden L4". Moses Simmons came to Plymouth on the Fortune, 9 November 1621.

By a deed dated 1 April 1679, acknowledged 14 April 1679, but not recorded until 10 April 1700, his father "in consideration of love and natural affection: conveyed to Joseph Alden my true & natural son all that my share of land...within the township of Bridgewater" (Plymouth Co LR, 3:194). Joseph Alden was on the list of men from Duxbury between 16 and 60 able to bear arms August 1643, but his name is interlined and may have been added a few years after the fact (PCR, 8:189). Joseph, with his brother Jonathan, was admitted a freeman of Plymouth Colony on 3 June 1657. He served on Grand Juries in 1660, 1666, and 1685; and on a jury to "lay out all ways in Bridgewater" in 1667. he was a surveyor of highways in Bridgewater, in 1669, 1679 and 1685.

At the Court of General Sessions and Common Pleas held in September 1686, Joseph Alden of Plymouth was freed from military training "for bodily infirmity".

The will of Joseph Alden, Sr., of the town of Bridgewater, dated 14 December 1696, proved 10 March 1696/7, was witnessed by Pallatiah Smith, Thomas Delano, and Joseph hayward. Executors were his wife Mary and son John. The inventory of the moveable estate, amounting to L76, was taken 3 march 1696/7 by John Leonard, Joseph Snow and Samuel Allin, Jr., and it stated that he died 8 February 1696/7. It was presented to John Alden on 10 March 1696/7. (Plymouth Co PR, #138, 1:256-57' MD, 671-74).

The daughter's names I cannot relate. . . Two of the daughters married into the family of Snow of Bridgewater . . .the other married a Burrill of Weymouth" (MD, 6:110-11).
