Cecil (or Cecilius) Calvert, 2nd Lord Baltimore, son and heir of George Calvert, Knt., 1st Lord Baltimore, of Danby Wiske, North Riding, co. York, member of the Virginia Company, by Anne, daughter of George Mynne, of Hertingfordbury, co. Hertford. He was baptised at Boxley, Kent, on 2 Mar 1605/6, being named after his godfather, the Earl of Salisbury. He entered Trinity College, Oxford university, in 1621, and was admitted to Gray's Inn on 8 Aug 1633. As heir to the charter promised his father, he promoted, though in England, the settlement of Maryland.

He was imprisoned in the summer of 1580 for his zeal in the cause of his communion. He was known as the 'Valiant', and served in 1588 as a volunteer with the imperial army in Hungary against the Turks, and having taken a standard from the enemy at Gran, in Hungary, was created by the Emperor Rudolph II, on 14 Dec. 1595, a Count of the Holy roman Empire. He was created Baron Arundell of Wardour, co. Wilts, on 4 May 1605.
