Cyrus Stowe, a Civil War veteran and one of Sun Prairie's pioneer citizens, died at 11:05 on Wednesday evening at the family residence on Bristol St. Mr. Stowe had been spending a month with his son, Elmer E. Stowe at South Bryon. He returned to this village last Thursday with his granddaughter, Miss Gladys M. Stowe, who was to remain with him until his wife returned the latter part of this week from the east. Mr. Stowe had been in usual health while away. On Friday he complained of not feeling well and on Saturday morning he became seriously ill. His illness and death were the result of a weakened heart. When Mr. Stowe's condition became critical Wednesday, his two sons were notified but they were unable to reach his bedside before his death. A particularly sad feature of the death is the absence of his wife, who started for Sun Prairie on Wednesday. She has been spending the past 7 weeks with relatives at her girlhood home in Brushton, NY and is expected home on Friday or Saturday. Until her arrival no funeral arrangements will be made. Mr. Stowe was born in Clinton County, NY and came to Sun Prairie in September of 1854 accompanied by his parents, several brothers and sisters, his wife, and infant daughter, Harriet. They spent the winter on the farm taken by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Stowe in Windsor. In the spring Mr. Stowe moved his family to Cazenovia where they lived for several years. Here the remaining 4 children of the family were born. Two of these, Amhurst E. and George W. died in infancy. It was while living in Cazenovia that Mr. Stowe entered the federal Army, where he served his country for several years. Shortly after the close of the war, Mr. Stowe moved his family back to Sun Prairie and erected the present homestead on Bristol St. He was a blacksmith by trade and owned what was known as the "old Pincheon blacksmith shop" on Main St., located across from where the Masonic Hall now stands. His wife died on March 6, 1895. On October 28 of the same year he was married to Miss Betheda Tryon of Brushton, who survives him. He also leaves one daughter, Mrs. E. A. Rodwell of Memphis, TN; two sons, Angelo J. of Chicago and Elmer E. of South Byron; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Hunt of Madison. Mrs. Hunt is now the sole surviving member of a family of 12 children. Mr. Stowe was a member of the local Methodist Episcopal Church for over half a century and the pastor, Rev. W. Millar, will conduct the funeral.

Cyrus married Sarah Ann RIDER. Sarah was born in 1825; died on 6 Mar 1895; was buried in Sun Prairie Cemetery, Sun Prairie, Dane Co., Wisconsin. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
