    John was Treasurer of the Dorchester Company (led by Rev. John White of Dorchester, Dorset). John brought servants, John Legge and John King with him and was Deputy governor of Massachusetts. He returned to England on 26 Oct 1641 and died in 1652 at Chaldon Herring, Dorset. His bother-in-law were Edward Clarke, who married Ann Pelham, Thomas Pelham, Isaac Johnson who married Arabella Fiennes for whom Gov. Winthrop named his ship, and John Gorges (b. 1593), son of Sir Ferdinando Gorges, Lord of the Province of Maine, and Anne Bell, who married Frances Fiennes. John is listed in the uncalendared "Proceedings of the Court of Requests of Charles I" (12 Oct 1634) as agent of Dorchester (co. Dorset) of the "adventurers" (led by Rev. John White (1547/5-1648) from 1623-1628 who were involved with salt they had seized at Cape Anne. They were named again on 11 Mar 1636/7 as adventures at Cape Anne in sale, boats, etc. (NEHGR 61:278; 65:298). He immigrated in June 1634 to Boston.

    Herbert Pelham (the elder), Esq., of Fordingham, co. Dorset and Hellingly, Sussex, son and heir of Anthony Pelham, of Buxstepe in Warbleton, Sussex, by his wife Margaret Hall. He was born about 1546 (aged twenty at his father's death in 1566), and was some thirty years her senior. His father sent him to Cambridge where he matriculated Fellow-Commoner from Queen's Michaelmas, 1562. Herbert and Elizabeth Pelham had four sons and six daughters. He was Sheriff of Sussex, but in 1582 was described as neglecting his duties. On Oct. 31, 1587 he purchased the manor of Michelham (the site of a priory). His later years were characterized by debt and sale of property including Michelham.

    Herbert married Elizabeth WEST on 12 Feb 1593/4 in Wherwell, co. Hants. Elizabeth (daughter of Sir Thomas WEST and Lady Anne KNOLLYS) was born on 11 Sep 1573 in Wherwell, co. Hamps; was christened on 14 Sep 1573 in Wherwell, co. Hamps; died on 15 Jan 1632/3. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Elizabeth was likely named in hoor of Elizabeth I. Elizabeth (West) Pelham lived with her son Thomas at the time of her death. She is remembered in her burial inscription: "Behold! Buried at your feet are the remains of Elizaeth, once the wife of Herbert Pelham, Esquire, sprung from the illustrious family of the lords De La Warr; whose youth was spent in the palace of our most serene Queen Elizabeth, her godmother; the rest of her life was spent inside private walls; the whose course of her life was devoted to the greatest piety and she departed this life in blessed peace January 15, 1632, aged 59.
